John Deere 3020
My 3020 has been leaking from an unknown location for a few months now. I tightened as many fittings as i could see and pressure washed it to see where it's coming from. I know all you guys out there who know what you're talking about like lots of details so I'll do my best :) the drips seemed to be coming down the center so I followed up and lifted to floor plate and fluid was pooling up so I blew it out tightened the fittings and checked later, more pooling fluid. I see there is a bolted on cover and I assume, a gasket. Also my loader is shakey for a while, throttled up and warm. It seems to work much better If I fill it up past full on the dipstick. Any ideas? Just so you know, my experience with machinery is fairly broad, im no mechanic but i grew up helping on grandpas farm, and operate equipment at work. Wait, I just thought of something while reading this post. Even though it works better with a couple or three extra quarts, is there an overflow that it's pushing that out of since I'm overfilling it? I would feel pretty stupid but at least I'll know. Also it's a gasser, does anyone know for sure what kind of engine oil to use? I didn't know so I filled it with what I use in my diesel pickup (can't remember the weight). Right after it strarted smoking a bit so I assume it's too thin. What's the required weight oil to use? Thank guys, any help is appreciated, especially engine oil weight. I need to get that out of there if its too thin.

Some diesel oils are recommended for gasoline engines some are not. IIRC 30 wt when 3020 was new but I think 15W40 will be fine. The cover with gasket under the floorboard is the trans cover. There should be no pressure hyd oil in there.

Yea, I figured that was trans cover. How about overflow, any ideas? The oil is definitely coming from that area. Very baffling. Maybe I will have to run the take the floor plate out and work the loader for a while to see if I can see where it's coming from. Maybe there's a pinhole leak in one of the rigid lines under the plate. I will just have to keep my feet out of there so I don't tear any wiring up. How about overfilling, does anyone have trouble running these at the 'full' level? When my stick says full I would swear im low, pump seems noisy, loader isn't as smooth... Almost to the point where I've wondered if If someone put a longer dipstick in lol
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I love my little 3020!

P.S. what do you do when the deer change patterns and there are no trees at the 3-way crossing to put a stand in?
Use a Deere stand!!! (see my pic) :)

On the part of hyd's operating better over full mark. It's possible the trans pump suction tube isn't sealed correctly therefore it sucks some air unless overfilled. I seen this before. The only wiring I remember under floorboard is for the lights and neutral start switch.

Yea Jim, that's pretty much what's under there for wiring. Hey since wiribg came up, do you know Why the fuel gauge reads low and jumps around? I'm not convinced its in the gauge or sending unit and don't want to spend the bucks if it's not. I'm also getting air in the system when it sits so that would explain that too any idea where the suction tube is? I looked for it a whole back when I was wanting to see if it was tight and have up. I can surely find the pump end but not sure about the reservoir end. Thanks a lot, you guys are great!!

Sorry it's be too long since JD employment on the fuel gauge problem. Fuel gauges dealt me grief when I was a service manager. On the fuel leaking back ,it could be the transfer(lift) pump or the supply line could have a pin hole in it(I've witnessed this several times). The supply line leaves lift pump and goes up under the bottom of fuel tank. It's hard to see under the fuel tank. It can have a hole but not leak fuel on the ground.

Jim, thanks for the advice. I'm sorry, my last post was misleading... What I was actually trying to say was my hydraulics were leaking back and I was wondering where the suction line was

There's a check valve that can go bad allowing hyd oil to leak back to sump. I know JD had a service bulletin on 4020's which should be the same for a 3020. IIRC the check valve goes in the supply line that is attached to the pressure control valve under the hood.

Could this be what you are talking about? http://www.geraldj.networkiowa.com/4020si.htm
My service manual shows a check valve in near the transmission pump but I have to remove the rockshaft housing??? Also It looks like the auction tube is all contained in the trans housing? I would like to try some of these but I don't want to take the whole rockshaft apart. Ideas?

Yes that's the service bulletin I was referring to. I was unaware that RS required removal but I'll check with some JD technicians.
