My JD 6300 is making a lot of rattling noise in the transmission input shaft area. I reached up and the transmission input side of the shaft seems to have a good bit of play. I can see some play in the u joint too. I take it the input shaft bearing and associated stuff is worn out. I also assume this means the powerquad assembly must be removed.

What I don't understand is, why is it not dumping hydraulic fluid?

I would appreciate any opinions.

The actual input shaft in the transmission is hollow. The driveshaft connects to a short stub shaft that slides inside of the hollow shaft. If you remove the driveshaft, you can slide the stub shaft out of the hollow shaft. There is no oil inside that hollow shaft. If the splines are worn inside of the input shaft, then the front cover/trans pump/front valve body assemble needs to be removed to replace the hollow shaft. Sometimes only the stub shaft needs replaced.

place the hollow shaft

You for the reply JD. If I have to remove "then the front cover/trans pump/front valve body assemble", will it be necessary for me to pull the whole power-quad assembly? Or, do you think I can do it "in tractor".

Also, I am considering this Kindle addition manual from Amazon to use as a guide. Amazon.com: John Deere 61 - 66 Workshop Repair Manual: 61, 62, 63, 64, 656 and 66 eBook: Manuals: Kindle Store

That job can be done without pulling the whole powerquad, at least it can on a regular 6300. I have no experience with the "L" models. I am assuming there is as much room in them. Do you have a creeper or "E'" and "F" range? If so, that makes it more challenging. Not as much room between flywheel and front of transmission.

Thank You agine. I have ordered the input shaft just to get the ball rolling. Yes I have the creeper moduel . I guess I am going to give the machine another wash tommorow. Then I will pull the 4wD shaft and pull the input shaft and ujoint . Looks tight.

I want to sell the machine but I think I need to have it running smoothly to get a decent price.

Off topic, the dam hour meeterbis missing. I have no clue what happened to it. The wires are cut smoth. I think someone stole the dam thing? Bizzare. Do you think the hours might be recoverable from the ECM. Or is the module under the right floorboard just for rock shaft control? I just replaced and re-pined the fuse link holder/ pug assembly / jup start assembly under right floor board. I tried to pull codes from dash but no luck.

Hours are only stored in the hourmeter in the instrument panel. The module under the floorboard is only for the hitch. Newer tractors with electronic fuel systems have the hours stored in the engine control unit.

I went to JD dealer a couple of days ago. They said my tractor is a straight European 6300. According to a parts diagram they have, my 6300 has another computer near the fuse pannels. Not so sure they are right . I have not seen it. I did see the two moduels to the right of the fuse pannels . But, I did not notice a larger square ecm looking thing. JD said maybe it is behind the fuse boxes. Maybe? I will look closer.

I have not proceeded yet with clutch input shaft play diagnosis. From parts diagram, there is a front bearing that supports the clutch shaft .
