I spun a bearing a whiel back on my Case 580B backhoe It is a 1974-75 model to the best of my knowledge. I finally got it all back together, went to fire it up and starter spun really slow. the orginal starter was shot so I ordered the exact same one except it was new and was a gear reduction unit.
Well, we put it in and went ot fire it and the starter just grinded on the flywheel. You can see where it touched the flywheel and it did not mesh with it. Did some measurements and the darn thing measures exactly the same as my old one ( which did mesh up just turned super slow)

I can't read my numbers on the old one but according to the Case site it is a Delco 1109143 anyone have any idea why this new starter would not mesh with the flywheel? And, better yet, anyone know of anyone parting out a Case 580b? thanks.

Scesnik,

Check the gear on the new starter. Make certain it has the same number of teeth as the old one.

I'm not sure of the exact dates, but if this 580B has a 188 diesel engine, Case changed the starters from 9 tooth to 10 tooth drive gears.

I ran into this same problem on my 1845 skid steer. I put 2 new starters with 10 tooth drive gears on it before I learned about the change. Once I finally found a starter with a 9 tooth drive gear, it worked perfectly.

Hope this helps.
