Looking at used 3 pt blowers and have seen both 540 rpm and 1000 rpm. My tractor has both a 540 & 1000 shaft. Is there any advantage to either? Should I stay away from 1000? My tractor has 85-90 PTO HP and a 12 spd

With 85 -90 HP you could use either. Just be sure the gear box on the 540 models are rated for that HP. i suspect the majority of them are.

90 HP at 540 rpm is a lot of torque. If youre going for a 7 foot or bigger thrower Id lean increasingly toward the hi rpm drive.

Its torque that throws/blows the snow out the chute- not rpm. Go with the 540 rpm. 90 HP @ 540 rpm has enough torque to throw snow over 100 feet.

Also - be aware, wet, sloppy snow does not throw/blow worth a dam. So if you are trying to move that type snow - don't get discouraged. I've always found the crusty, crunchy snow - that the auger has to grind up - blows the furthest. Dry, powdery snow makes a spectacular show but you will find an awful lot blows back on you.

1000 rpm pto essentially halves the drive torque required by the implement. The output torque from the implement then doubles in the implement gearbox so its the same as you get with 540. The advantage to the 1000 rpm drive is less torque load on the PTO stub and telescoping shaft. At 540 you will be transmitting about 1000 ftlb at 90HP.
