54" mower deck gearbox rebuild 425 AWS

is it possible to rebuild this part for my 425? This is the second time I've replaced the darn thing and it was not cheap. This gearbox broke a tooth off one of the upper gears causing a major cluck in it. But it did not leak gear grease like the original one, that one the bottom seal went bad on it and it ate the bearnings. Thanks, Mark

I understood that they are not re-buildable. I could be wrong, and sorry to hear about the failure.. let alone that it is the 2nd one.

I've had the 54" decks on several lawn tractors, and yet to have a failure. How many hours on the deck when these bad things happen?

Not sure about the first one, guessing about 7 years ago, but the second is about 1820 hours. The second time it started out as a clicking noise and progressed to a true clunk as the tooth got worse. When I pulled the deck off and turned the drive shaft it had a true dead spot. I really like the tractor and mower, so I just keep throwing cash at it.

I'm certain that the internal gears can be replaced. I have changed my X750 60HD gear box oil three times with 131 hours. I changed it out with Amsoil extreme pressure gear oil, 75w-90 full synthetic. I thought that the gearbox is the weak link in the power transmission to the mower deck. The manual calls for gear box oil changes every 400 hours which to me is too long a time. Here are some links to mitered gears. I'm certain that the box can be disassembled, and the gears removed from there shafts, after all, John Deere built it in the first place. Let us know what you find out, and how it's working out for you.

My understanding when buying my first 425 with the 54" deck was the gearbox was not a serviceable item (not to be able to change oil in them or add oil).
One of the reasons I rarely ever wash off the mower deck and only blow it off with air after mowing. Not saying that is what caused failure.

shows the available parts (item #'s) if taken apart.. otherwise part #9 is the complete unit. Likely gears and shafts fitted at time of mfg.

Foxgap, look at the pictures posted at this ad, it looks like the gears are set screwed to the shafts.

This is great!!!!!! I will be taking a look at all the links later today and I will have to talk to my friend about a hand taking the thing apart. The gear grease inside of the grearbox is clear yet so I do not think the bearings are toast, yet. I will keep everyone in the loop how we make out. If it works at least I have a spare gearbox laying around.
