My brother has a 5203 that I have been using from time to time. The last few times I have used the tractor, it feels like there is a parking brake on. Today I drove it down the road a half mile or so, and it wouldn't hardly pull itself in high gear. Step on the clutch and it stops immediately, like the brakes are on.

I initially thought there was a park brake or something on, but there's not one, so...what gives? I sure don't want to tear anything up or break anything, I'll never hear the end of it.

On my 5303 with 9F/3R transmission, the parking brake is a selection on the gear shift. Possible a brake is dragging??

I'll bet the brake disks are dragging from weakening brake return springs(parts key #9).

I agree with others most likely the problem is the brakes. Being careful with the loader and attachment up, tractor off, on level ground and in neutral can you push it? If no as others have said, most likely the problem is the brakes. My tractor is a 5210 with a loader and I have no problem pushing it, when on level ground.

First, you need to be sure the brake pedals or the brake valve is not sticking and not allowing brakes to release. If that seems ok, then jack up the tractor and see if the wheel spins free. If it is dragging, loosen the bleed screw and see if it frees up. If it still drags with the bleed screw loose, then the problem is in the brakes. The final drives will need to come off. You might have bad retractor pins as TX Jim said. When reassembling the brake into the final drive, the retractor pins need to be pressed in until they bottom out.

If you are going to do this yourself I recommend you get the tech manual. See SelectManuals.com - Workshop, Repair and Service Manuals for the tech manual it is under $30.00.

Just be careful with removing the tire, which I am guessing is loaded.

Good Luck, let us know what you find out.
