I hve about 450 hours on my 5105. Recently the hydraulic pump started groaning when I steer and when I lift the 3pt hitch. I can see the fluid is OK through the window at the rear of the tractor. I also see bubbles in the fluid, and possibly some discoloratioin, just slightly...not confident about that as it has always been green from the factory.

The dealer said they replaced the hydraulic filter at the appropriate hours, 250 I think.

I am worried it will need a new hydraulic pump. Can anyone give some guidance?

Even if the filter was changed at 250 hours, I would change it again to be safe. It sounds like you have a restricted filter or screen, or you could have an air suction leak on the suction line somewhere. Take a close look at the large suction line that runs on the left side of the tractor from the filter housing to the hydraulic pump. Be sure there is no damage and check hose clamps to be sure they are tight.

thanks for the response - the suction line, is that the line that's made of steel or some metal? There is a large line that is hard like steel...that the one?

Yes, that is the one.

Check the suction line like Kenny said. You mentioned discoloratioin to the fluid. What kind of discoloratioin? Is it milky looking or just a little darker than it was when new. If it's milky looking you may have water contamination.

roger...will check the suction line and yes, it is milky with a "vein" or layer of darker color in the window. I 'm thinking more and more to change fluid, filter, clean teh screen and look all over for cracks and leaks

Any other tips? easy to get the screen out to clean?

OMRE72817: 5105 and 5205 Tractors, Block File: AG_OUO1032_2569_19_23AUG99.htm

posted above is the relevant portion from the manual. as you can see, it is almost worthless...

I first drained the hydraulic fluid, after obtaining a new filter and enough hyd. oil to do the job. I then removed the pickup screen and hosed it off. It was completely clogged. I then dried it with low heat on a hair dryer. No water remained on the filter. I reinstalled the filter, replaced the main hyd. filter, filled with new fluid to the right level, and it sounded like it just came off the lot...

problem solved. Thanks all!

Great news!

Hmm.. good to hear that you cleared up the steering and 3pt hydraulic problems -- but, any idea on how the situation developed in the first place?

Sounds like the tractor was maintained per JD specs (250 hours - total change-out); so, how did the sump filter get so bad and the fluid so contaminated in 200 hours of operation?

That's the situation to address in order to avoid a repeat of the current issues or possible major repair problems down the road.

Hello all, i'm new here, found this post while doing a search as i am having the exact problem myself and received the same advice from the JD mechanic.tried to start today but dont have the right socket and a cresent tried to round the drain plug. anyway just wanted to relay what the JD mechanic told me when i asked him this question because the hydraulics was serviced less than 200 hrs ago. he said the most likely cause is condensation build up from lack of use contaminating the hydro fluid. in my case this makes sense because i use the tractor very little after sept/oct and it doesnt get heavy use again until late feb/early march. i hope i didnt bring up a post to old but with my little experiance this may be the only contribution i cam make for quite sometime. i just found the forum today but am really impressed with what i have read and the knowledge present. thanks to all and God bless.

earl.
