My owners manual says the transmission (sync shuttle-9F/3E) must be in Park to start engine as well as PTO disengaged. I have never tried starting with PTO engaged but I think I have started with clutch depressed and transmission in neutral or a gear. Yesterday I tried starting out of Park and when I turned key nothing happened. Put in Park and fired right up. Is the owners manual correct? Will it start out of Park?

If it's the same as my 5M, it will start with the lever out of park, but the shuttle must be in neutral.

What do you mean shuttle? Transfer case (A, B, C)? How do you get shuttle in neutral? Gearshift in neutral even if clutch depressed?

Your tractor doesn't have a true shuttle shift

Ok. But do you think the owners manual is correct? Does it have to be in park to start? I am almost certain I have started it in gear with clutch in but yesterday it did not (once). Just wondering if I have an intermittent problem brewing? I guess if it starts in Park every time then not a problem. If I had the starting circuit logic diagram I could see if there is a permissive requiring trans in Park to complete start circuit. With Diesel engines, do you ever need to pause between key in On vs start?

I had the same questions/problem with my 5075, 3 speed. Manual saying it must be in park. However, This is not true as tractor will start in neutral without clutch pressed in. The problem was with the starter. One way to test is to see if voltage is getting to starter solenoid.

So your starter solenoid was bad? Did it happen early?

Once yours started malfunctioning, was it intermittent, or would it just not start until repaired? If you have it in gear with clutch depressed will it start?

Jim,
My bad. Thought he had a shuttle shift.
I've never seen a "regular" transmission with a "Park" position.

Yes, I have the regular transmission called a sync-shuttle. It has an integrated Park position. The owners manual says it must be in Park and must not have PTO engaged to start it. I am almost certain it has started Not in Park with clutch depressed but yesterday (once) it would not even "turn over" until I put in Park. Then fired right up. Just wondering if anyone else believes the owners manual is correct . It is on page 40-2. If it is supposed to start when not in Park but clutch depressed, I may have a starter or starter solenoid problem.
