So, I was bushhogging and the "Engine Air Cleaner Restriction Indicator" and "Service Alert Indication" started flashing. Based on this, I tapped off the filter that had a lot of dirt in it. Put it back in and went another couple hundred yards and they started flashing again, but went off before too long by themselves. I went further and then the "Engine Information Indicator" and "Engine Stop Indicator" started flashing. I shut the tractor down quickly once I saw the stop. I have replaced the air filter now and tried to start the tractor. It turns over, but does not start easily. I have gotten it to crank several times and it runs for about 15 seconds before it shuts off like you turned the key. The last few times the "Service Alert" and "Engine Information" lights come on. When it starts, it runs like there is no problems and sounds good. Anyone know what this might be or how to fix it?

I have disconnected the battery and am leaving it off until tomorrow and I am wondering what the sensor is just past the air filter box. Mass airflow or the air restriction indicator? The only other thing that I have seen looking at the one thread I could find is that someone had an issue with the cold start temp sensor.

The fuel return line being clogged can cause starting then cut off like that.

Look further in the intake air stream for a thing with wires coming out of it. The air massflow sensor is probably plugged or shorted, too.

I'm going to take some mafs cleaner with me tomorrow to try and see if it helps. I figured that is the most likely culprit since I have had no other issues until this. I find it unlikely that anything went out at this exact moment, but with all the electronic stuff on it, I didn't know if there was anything that might be tied to it in some way.

Is there any way to find more information than what the symbols are showing without having the dealer hook a laptop to it?

Ok, so I learned a few things today. I finally figured out how to access the trouble codes on my tractor.

I have found that one of them at least is related to the fuel pressure. Here are the codes that are showing up if anyone has any information:

ECU PA 157.01
ECU PA 1569.31
Ptr PA 2820.31
Ptr PA 524021.31
ECU PA 107.15
ECU PA 157.17

Well, to finish my conversation, I think there were several coincidences conspiring against me.

After talking to a JD Tech, he confirmed that the relevant codes had to do with fuel pressure and his suggestion was to look at the tank screen. I pulled the hose off at the fuel filter and there was no flow, so I was agreeing with the tech at that point. When I got off the tractor, I recall it being about 2/3-1/2 full of fuel. I went to syphon the tank and all I could get was a small shot of diesel with a glob of gel or something, so I figured the tank had a bunch of junk in it and would need to be taken off. Wondering why I had not gotten more fuel than that, I looked in and my tank is almost empty. So, either my fuel gauge got stuck or someone syphoned my diesel for me while it was parked in the field. If it was stuck, it would all make sense why it wouldnt start back.... I did go ahead and take off the tank. There was not much more trash in it at all, but I rinsed it with some fresh diesel and removed the fittings and screen. The screen was black and looked bad, but did not appear to be clogged. I left it our and placed an inline filter under the floor pan that I can change without draining the tank. It was a wix 33270, which cross references to what I read used to be put on the 5 series tractors. I changed the fuel filter and fuel line while I was at it since I had not done that since I bought the tractor. I had removed the fuel gauge and the float at one point got stuck at the top for a while, but otherwise seemed to move and didnt have any trash in it. I put it back together and filled it up and it fired right up and didnt give me any codes.

So, long story short, I serviced the parts I hadnt already done and learned a little in the process. If someone didnt steal my fuel, I'm going to say my fuel gauge was stuck and I ran out. The other option is a little trash stopped up the tank screen and blocked the fuel. Either way, the air filter warnings were just coincidental. Now I can get back to bushhogging.

Good for you. It is easy to have one issue so firm in your mind you forget the other things that can affect to give similar results.

That was a good decision to remove the screen and replace with the in-line filter. Those screens are very fine and have very little surface area. They clog easily.
