Hey guys, after looking at the John Deere parts catalog I see that the main difference between the 5055 and the 5065 engines are the injectors. I found the injectors (all three) for under $200. Any idea if this would give me the extra 5 to 10 horsepower?

The control of the air/fuel mixture (volume, timing) would also be necessary to determine the engine's Hp output. That's where the injector pump configuration would be important.

There's more to the Horsepower output than just injectors.

Yes you're right, but with most turbo diesels, more fuel = more power as long as its in moderation. The small increase in these injectors sizes shouldnt need any adjustment in timing or pressure. The only real concern I have is if the injector pump can keep up with additional demand under heavy loads. Since the pump isnt running at max flow under normal mowing conditions, im thinking the injectors would be fine until it starts to strain.

Just my thoughts, but I appreciate everyone elses thoughts and ideas too. There doesnt seem to be much info on the subject of modding most of these machines, and I cant help but want to change things.

You'll have to consider "turning the pump up", too. Farmer's have been doing it for many years.

Can be something you won't want to discuss with your dealer if the tractor is new and under warranty, though.

I totally agree with what AKfish stated about raising HP will take turning up the inj pump and then maybe injectors. Usually more HP equates to higher engine operating temperatures.

I have heard of turning up the injector pump pressure on older Ford IDI diesels, but didnt know it was possible with tractors. Any info out there on how to adjust the pump pressure on the newer JD's?

I am not sure you will even notice a 5 to 10 hp jump in power, and for 200 bucks, I would want to feel it. You might get a bump with just injectors if they flow more at the same pressure as the stock ones? If they don't flow more at the same pressure, then you won't gain a thing, but a lighter wallet. Turning up a mechanical fuel pump is an art form that I know nothing about. The guys that can do it, can make some good power out of modest engine. The temps will go up a little, but the cooling system should handle that. It will use more fuel for sure, and you will get some smoke out the exhaust. But thats kind of coool.

Thanks for the reply. I am planning on borrowing a 15' light-duty batwing from a family member in a few days, and was thinking the extra 5-10hp might be worth it if I use the batwing very much. Hopefully I will have some extra money and time to play with this idea more soon.
