2001 JD 790
Hello all,

I recently bought a 2001 JD 790 and with warmer weather on the way, it's time for a full service. I'm actually taking it up to my local technical college and having the students do the servicing on it. I know the professor VERY well and I know it will be well taken care of.
I printed off the service manual for the engine, transmission, etc. I will get all the filters (air, oil, tranny) from my JD dealer but was wondering if I really have to get the oil there as well. I live in Maine.....what oil should I put in the engine and tranny?
Are there any places on line that I can order these items rather than go to the dealer? I know the dealer charges big bucks and i'm sure there are other brands that work just as well as JD brands. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

There is a chart in the operator's manual that has viscosity/temp ranges. you could use that as a guide. I don't know what the recommended substitutue for the tranny would be, John Deere only recommends HY Guard in the manual. I have a 2008 3005 that I will be servicing next week, being it is the first oil change I will be buying the JD Plus50 from the dealer I bought the tractor from. You may find some info in the oils and lubricants section on this forum. I Googled JD Plus50 and it showed it as premium synthetic 0w-40 and 50 plusII as 15w-40 and 10w-30.
