Is there a chance you failed to drain a couple of those lower resovoir areas. I have three plugs to pull out to completely drain my hydraulics but I really have no personal knowlege about a dk40.

I don't have my manual with me so this is from memory: I'm recalling that I used less than two full 5 gallon pails of hydraulic fluid when I changed mine. That would fit with your 8 gallon experience. I cannot swear to that so call your dealer. I also seem to recall that there are three drains for the HST but I could be confused as it was six months ago that I changed the HST oil/filter and I might be confusing it with the front axle drains.

I'm thinking you don't get confused all that often.

I know on my gear machine there are a bunch of drain plugs to come out to get all the oil out.

i know when i change my tranny oil it says in the manual it holds 10 galion, i got about 10 out of it but only got about 9 back in it til i run it for awhile, you see the tranny is the hydraulic resevoir too, so if you only got less than the book says i'd say you still got some oil in your 3 point or loader, powersteering, all them things take hydro oil, unless its different on hydro models than it is on the manual trannies. be sure you clean the drain plugs real good, mine have magnets on them to catch the shavings from the breaking in process and its very important not to skip the oil change routine for a new tractor, theres a lote of metal in the oil, looks like metalic paint almost. don't forget the front axel too, it have metal specks in it too.
