I just did the 50 hour engine and hydraulic oil services. One suggestion I haven't seen posted before is to have a spare hydraulic drain plug washer. Mine has a rubber seal at the ID which was peeling off a small thread. I reused it, but would have replaced it if readily available. Also, get the 2 strainer "O" rings. I didn't need them, but why get held up if there is damage? I used a $3.85 strap-type wrench from Tractor Supply for the filters. It works good for the engine filter since you can put a 1/2" drive socket wrench in the end. Or use a 3/4" open end on the outside. Rather than include the picture of the wrench, does the gap in the air filter cap look OK? I doubt it leaks air, but wonder if other's look like this (gap widest at arrows).

I agree that having these spare parts on hand would be a good idea. My transmission drain plug washer was also somewhat damaged but seems to have sealed well anyway.

Do the drain plugs have magnets on them?
If not, can anyone tell me what sizes the drain plugs are for an L3830? I'd like to get magnetic drain plugs for all drain points before my 50 hours service.

Thanks,
Chris

I've never heard of magnets on the plug, but it sounds like a good idea. However I recently saw a speeboating web site that is selling extra strong magnets that go on/over your oil filter. Again, sounds like a good idea, but I've never tried it. Here is a link to the site. I saw the info about the magnets at the top of the area they call the 'open fourm'.

I'm not seeing a lot of use in a filter magnet. The reason is because the filter is supposed to stop things like that to begin with. If ferrous metal get into the filter, it can only come from one direction, and will eb trapped by the element, negating the need for the magnet, in my opinion.
The drain plug magnet makes sense to me because it will attract, metal particles BEFORE they go through the oil pump. While this is not fool proof unless the entire fluid container bottom is magnetic, it is better than nothing, and can help the owner get an idea of what's going on in the engine when they change the oil (same for other fluid resovoirs).

I have a magnetic plug on my auto tranny in my truck (came with the double deep pan), and I have seen the metal on it when changing the fluid and been able to ask the tranny manufacturer about it (it was OK).

With a filter magnet, you'll never know what it's doing unless you cut your filters apart after pulling them (I probably wouldn't mess with this).

Thanks,
Chris

I work for a Kubota dealer and many of Kubota's hydraulic/transmission filters are now coming with a magnet on the end.

I guess it's one way to easily spot wear or breakage. How many of you actually cut your filters open to look inside them after use?

I lost a drain plug washer when changing the oil in my front axles. I'm 15 miles from town, so I just put the plug in the drain hole without the washer. No leaks and it's been 60 hours since I lost the washer.
I bought a new washer and will install it next time I change the axle oil.
I also found the old washer the next week when sweeping the shop.
