I've read in this forum that the Mahindra operator's manual can be inconsistent at times so I just wanted to make sure it's really necessary to change the hydraulic filter at 50 hours. Since the maintenance interval is normally 200 hours for this filter, it just seemed a bit odd.

I'm curious to know why the first for this would be at 50, then 200? Is there something about a brand new hydraulic system that puts a heavy toll on the filter in the first 50 hours?

I cannot speak to the Mahindra manual, but Kubota seems to be similar in this respect. I have not gotten to my 50 hour yet, so this is my perspective from what I have read.

The first change at 50 hours is simply due to the break in wear leaving shavings in the fluid. Changing at this time removes this debris from the system and reduces wear on the internal parts.

It makes senses that you could simply strain and filter the oil and reuse, but I think the recommendation is to replace so that a bad filtering job and/or extremely fine contaminants that might not filtered out are not potential causes of fluid contamination for another 150 hours of operation.

Now that makes perfect sense, I had suspected this might be the reason. Thanks. If comments like this were included in the operator's manual, I'd bet far fewer owners would dare neglect this recommendation...if not change filters and lubricants even more often.

I'm at 42 hours on my 2516 and just ordered my filter kit from Wallace Tractor. I'm **** about following the manufactures schedules. I will probably service mine in the next 2 weeks after I winterize the boat and RV ..grrr.

I was shocked to find out that my dealer had the Mahindra brand Hydraulic filter for $43 and the oil filter for $13, no need for me to be trying to find a cross reference deal now.
