Hey everyone. I am looking at buying a tiller for my tractor. I have a NH TZ25DA which, I believe, has 19HP going to the PTO. I have some heavy blue clay soil with scattered dead roots from some pine trees I pulled. I finally found someone locally selling a CountyLine 5’ Tiller for a decent price.

1) How do I know that it is compatible with my tractor?

2) I was really hoping for a 4’ tiller because I worry that with my soil condition and PTO power can’t handle a 5’ tiller and it looks like a 6 tine on this Tractor Supply one, although I can’t really tell and specs didn’t say....

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

I've all three, a 5' KK, heavy clay w/roots and a B7610.
It MIGHT manage if you take shallow bites.
But mine bogged down terrible when it hit the clay, so I ended up using it with my M4710 (50HP).
keep cool and spaced out

What's the width of the tractor? When I buy tillers, I just buy a tiller that the cutting width will cover the width of the tractor. Personally, I do see the need to have a tiller much more wider that the tractor, at least up to 35/40 HP.

I have a bota b2650 (which has the same HP) and a 48" king cutter tiller. I also have loamy soil. I could easily handle 12 more inches. In more clay soils, you may have to run slower/shallower on initial runs. That said, a tiller has never won a race. BTW, roots love to wrap around tiller axles. If it's a good price and it doesn't work out, you can always sell it without getting hurt.

I have a MF GC1710 with 18.7 PTO HP and a KK 4' offset tiller. I have heavy red clay here and can kill my tractor if I bite too big when it's still wet enough. The tines clog with clay if I bury it too deep and I have to lift it and clear them with a shovel. You'll be able to power a 5' and you'll be fine in topsoil but you'll have to be careful in clay.

If the tractor was a TC25d (bigger frame), I would say go for it. With the smaller TZ series, I would stick with a 48" tiller.

I think rule of thumb is 5HP (at PTO) per foot of tiller.
5' tiller would thus require 25HP at the PTO, while you have 19HP.
It might work in my sandy loam, but nearly impossible in your "heavy blue clay" with roots.
You might try removing one row of tines from the 5' tiller.
You really need a 4' tiller though, or maybe even a bit bigger tractor?

If you might buy a new tiller, consider at least a King Kutter (there are other still better brands).
Sometimes the TSC tillers are made by KK (usually by Tarter Gate), but when KK builds tillers for TSC they are built to meet a price.
Both Tarter Gate and KK tillers when specifically built for TSC, are built to minimum specs.

I have found Blain's Farm and Fleet to almost always have the best prices on KK items.
It matters not where you live for shipping ( I live 1,100 miles from Blain's)
Blain's always has great shipping prices.

I am looking at buying a tiller for my tractor.

1) How do I know that it is compatible with my tractor?

The Category 1 Three Point Hitch has been standardized on compact tractors up to ~~40-horsepower~~ since about 1960.

In turn, implements are designed to match industry standard Category 1 dimensions. Have no fear, tractor and roto-tiller are compatible.

Heavier, more powerful tractors have Category 2-3-4 Three Point Hitches.

I warn you in advance, connecting the tiller PTO shaft to the tractor splines can be frustrating before you gain experience.

DIRECTIONS: connect PTO shaft to compact tractor site:tractorbynet.com - Google Search

Personally, I wouldn't buy a 5' for that low of hp tractor, it would be MUCH better matched to a 4' tiller.

I have to agree with the opinions expressed that it is too much tiller for your tractor. I ran across what I considered a deal on a tiller several years ago that is a metric measurement but basically a 4.5’ tiller. I have done gray clay, red clay and ground that has not been tilled in 30-40 years. I can get through it, but often need to make several passes going slightly deeper each pass. It just barely covers the width of my rear tires on their widest setting. My PTO is rated at 20 hp. I should have gone smaller.
Roots larger than your little finger diameter are likely to cause great problems. I suggest a light tilling the soil. 3/4” depth then heavy raking of the area and then till to about 2” deep. And rake again. Keeping a close watch on your tilling and for the roots wrapping on the tiller.
If your intentions are for a garden till in some gypsum once your ground is tilled to a 4-6” depth.
One last point ask lots of questions here !
Again look for a 4’ tiller.
