What do you all think of this? I was looking for something a little bigger but this one sounds like i could have some fun with it.

Here's the description:

John Deere 950 with loader. 825 hours, 28hp, power steering, 3pt. hitch, bucket and pallet forks, Runs great, new battery and exhaust. Faded paint, a few dents, tires fair. $8,000. o/b/o. I bought it in 1992, It's been a great tractor, just don't use it much anymore.

(he said he'll take 7k for it).

Thanks in advance

Rackluster, I dont know what the average going price is on the older machines but a good rule of thumb to figure out what its worth would be to subtract 20-25% of the original sale price for the 1st year and then 5% for every year after that.

For example: I just bought a 2007 JD 2305 TLB for $15,250 and when new the tractor was new it cost $20k. So using the formula from above I should have spent around $14,440. Then again you would be hard-pressed to find a tractor like that for less than $15k.

Tractors are only worth what people are willing to pay for them. I would recommend looking around on ebay, craigslist, and places like tractorhouse.com to see what similar machines are going for on average, that will give you a good idea.

well, i pulled the trigger on the 950. it also had pallet forks. not the greatest shape in the world but it runs nice. hood is messed up but it runs great. the mfwd will be nice on my land. i'm bringing it to the deere dealer in the morning for a once over. we'll see how that goes. thanks all for the info the last few days...

You'll love that tractor, I have a 1985 model and its a great tractor. Your lucky yours already has power steering, I am adding it to mine, and 825 hours is nothing for that old of a tractor, mine has 2100 hours on it, doesn't leak a drop of anything, burn an ounce of oil, all I do is grease it and change the fluids once in awhile. Never had an issue with it. I'd say you got a steal on that for $7,000. W/ power steering, mfwd and a loader you would have no problem recouping the cost out of it, and it will stay the same value or close to it for quite a few years. Hope you enjoy it!!

Rackluster,

If it is mechanically sound I think you did good.
Hope it works out for you.

I have bought used in the past and operate them for awhile get everything fixed thats needed and then go over the cosmetics. Usually means I can use them for 10 years and then get my money back.:D
