I have a 2002 Kubota L3010 with HST. I'm not sure exactly how to fully utilize the four wheel drive on the tractor and could use some help. Is the 4WD operational all the time...or do I have to engage it? Is there a locking differential...and if so, how do I engage this?

Ten years I've owned this and and just now asking about this. I know it seems idiotic, but I've really never had the tractor in a situation where I cared about using 4WD. However, I am considering getting the tractor into a wet/boggy area on my property and having maximum ability to extricate myself could be pretty handy.

Thanks for the advice....

There is a lever... If I remember right, it would be behind your left foot as you are sitting in the seat. It engages 4 wheel drive.
There is also a diferentail lock behind your left foot that you can step on that locks the diferential.
Don't shift into 4WD when you are moving.
Don't step on the Dif. Lock when spinning.

I'm sure it's just a typo, but I think the diff lock is behind the right foot.:D

This sounds right to me...thanks. And yes, I think the locking diff lever is behind the left foot. SO, if I get in trouble and have a wheel spinning (assuming its in 4WD) I just press the lever and it locks in all four wheels??

Don't engage differential lock while the wheels are spinning. Let off and let your wheels stop before engaging.

You have an open front differential, so you can't lock that. LD1 gives a pretty good explanation of how differentials work.

At best you can only have three wheel drive with that model tractor when the diff lock is engaged.

Do not engage while spinning!

I normally recommend to only use the diff lock to get out of a bad area!!
To use it going into a bad area will only get you in deeper!!!!

The differential lock on a hydro equipped tractor will always be behind your left foot. Otherwise you would not be able to move the tractor, you need your right foot to operate the hydro pedal.

Definatally do not engage when spinning. It breaks things.

And not make a habit of using the diff lock all the time when just working. Only use it if you get stuck. Because if you make a habit of keeping it engaged, it puts extra stress on things when turning and it also chews up the ground more.

Still will be 4wd.:confused2: I know we have been through this before. just because a wheel isnt spinning and slinging mud does NOT mean that it aint trying to drive you out of the muck. It is trying with JUST as much force as the wheel that is spinning to be exact.

Open differential is EQUAL torque between wheels and UNEQUAL speed. (hence one can be spinning and other stationary). But the torque to the one not spinning is still the same as the one spinning.

With a differential locked, that is EQUAL speed but can be UNEQUAL torque.
