I bought a used 2009 jd 2305 and am not sure it is fully in 4wd. What exactly do you have to do to put it in 4wd?
Thanks,
Don

I haven't been on ours in a while, but check on the right side toward the back floor board.

First, get an ops manual ASAP.... ;' > Really!
You may find on line downloads of same.

Then replace any missing stickers/decals that show what lever and direction of throw does what.

As to specifics, I've got orange, and had the same issues until I did the above.

Have fun, but be very careful until you figure your machine out.

Have fun,

This is from the 2305 Manual:

Using Mechanical Front Wheel Drive (MFWD)
NOTE: Label on dash illustrates MFWD operation.

Mechanical front wheel drive (MFWD) enables the powertrain to drive both front and rear axles for improved traction on difficult ground conditions and provides 4-wheel braking. MFWD can be engaged and disengaged on-the-go with light loads and on low traction surfaces.

c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Use extra caution when driving on slopes. To increase traction and provide four-wheel braking, engage mechanical front wheel drive (MFWD) when driving on slopes. Be aware that MFWD can improve access to dangerously sloped terrain, thereby increasing the possibility of tipover.

To improve braking on sloped, icy, wet, or graveled surfaces, engage the MFWD. Add ballast to the tractor and travel at a reduced speed to avoid skidding and loss of steering control.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Always disengage MFWD when driving on a paved surface.

Put the transmission levers in neutral to move the machine when the engine is not running.

NOTE: It may be necessary to reduce engine load to disengage front wheel drive.

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Hand engage MFWD lever only. Foot engagement can damage mechanism.

Push down on MFWD lever (A) to engage MFWD. Pull up on lever to disengage MFWD.
See attached picture for location of (A)

Tips for Operating MFWD:
Maintain front tire pressure at maximum allowable level to ensure proper tire performance in all field conditions.

Engage MFWD to provide four-wheel braking.

Disengage MFWD when driving machine to or from work site to increase front tire life.

On a 2210 that I tried, it was exactly the same as is on my 4010. There's a lever just behind your left foot. With the lever forward, it's in 4WD. It's an almost vertical level that's pretty much beside the horizontal lever for locking the differential temporarily.

It's tough at times to engage/disengage. You pretty much need to have all stress off the driving wheels. The easiest on my 4010 is when the tractor is virtually coasting on a slight downhill.

Even at 6 years and about 400 hours, it hasn't gotten much easier to engage/diisengage.

Try raising the front (with the loader) when disengaging. That helps qute a bit with my 4400.
There are things I really like about my 4400...but shifting in and out of 4WD isn't one of them. My old 790 was a lot easier.

On my 4300 I just sorta catch it (the lever) with the side of my shoe and lift to engage. Rest my heel on it (no need to stomp on it) and wiggle the steering (while under way) to disengage. Once the snow comes in the fall it pretty well stays engaged until spring however....
