I was cutting my hay yesterday with my hn 499 haybine, when the sickle bars and the header bars stopped moving. The crimpers were still spinning and there was no jam to be found. When checking the belts on the right side of the haybine were slipping and smoking. I have since tried to find out what is stopping everything from moving. The gear box is not locked up and the crimpers will free spin when the belt is loosened. The sickle bars will move about a quarter turn and stop. I have looked in the gear drive boxes for any broken parts and have not found any. The chain on the header bar is not jammed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Man….I haven’t been in a haybine in about 10 years. And you’ve looked for obvious signs of everything moving freel? If the belts are smoking, then something is jammed. is anything bent along the cutter bar?
Can you drain the gearbox and see if it has any chunky junk in. the oil?

I think you might want to troubleshoot the sickle bar and the pickup header separately.

If the sickle bar quit moving . . . common failure there is the bushing that attaches the wobble box to the sickle bar. Is that intact and is the wobble box moving back and forth? (I assume not.)

If not, is it because one of the chains or the belt on the left side are broken or off the sprocket?

You said that the sickle bar "will move about a quarter turn and stop". Not sure what you mean since it moves back and forth. But if it's not free to move back and forth as driven by the wobble box arm, that's the first problem to focus on.

It's not always obvious if a guard or shim or something else has the sickle bar jammed up. If the wobble box is trying to turn and can't move the sickle bar, you may need to remove the bolt at the sickle bar head where it attaches to the wobble box and try to move it manually in order to see where it's hung up. Or look it over again very closely and see if a knife has lost a bolt/rivet or otherwise determine what is keeping it from moving freely.

Seems more likely to me that something on the sickle bar is broken or jammed than on the pickup head. This would be my first step. Good luck.

My 1499 suffered a similar issue, but can’t remember what I did to resolve it. It was definitely in the wobble box.

Seems to me like 90% of my breakdowns on haybines relate to sickle-bar (guards, knives, head-bushing, etc.). That seems to take the most abuse from rocks or uneven ground plus there a lots of parts with lots of bolts or rivets to fail. As you know, it's not hard to jam up a sickle-bar. Had to pull several out with another tractor or ratchet straps in order to get it un-stuck and figure out where it was hanging up.

So is it fixed?

Had to bale what was cut. Baler not working correctly so spent most the time working on it. Maybe next week I will try and fix it.

After putting 300 small square bales in the barn, I went to work on the swather. After reading some of your replies, I took a closer look at the sickle bar. One of the rock guards had lost a bolt and nut. It let the knife get on top and had the bar wedged so tight that it would not move either direction. Replaced the bolt and nut, aligned the guard and everything worked. Thank you for your replies. Now on to replacing the pivot roller on my New Holland 660.

Good deal! I still use a haybine too. The sickle bar and that leading edge sure takes most of the abuse. Glad you found it!
