Tractor
John Deere 4720
At the dealer today I was told that a JD 4720 could be fitted to operate Cat II implements. Does anybody out there know anything about this? I don't want to overtax the tractor, but I think there might be a few cat II implements I might want to use.

I decided to e-mail this question directly to John Deere customer service. Interestingly, they told me that they didn't really have anybody that could answer that question directly and referred me back to the dealer. I called a different dealer and he too didn't see any problem with modifying the tractor to accept the CAT II implements.

The method that both dealers suggested was to cut off the end of the arm and weld on a new end that was CAT I/II compatible (the ball in the end has two different sized holes). I just thought some others of you might like to know.

I Maybe missing something here But isn't the pin slots on the I match for a cat II ??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Could you just use an I match to attach your cat II impliments.

That would be great if it's the case. I can't find any confirmation of that on their website. I wonder why the dealers I've spoken to haven't mentioned that.

Interesting point! I do know that you have to buy bushings that go on the implement's CAT I pins to use the iMatch. Hummmmm... Maybe the bushing OD is different than the size of a CAT II pin? I don't know.

My 4720 with the standard arms do not support CAT 2 as far as I can tell. The reason I figured that out was that my 5525 supports both CAT 1 & 2.

Did the JD customer service folks respond?

ddivinia,

Do you have the i-Match?

I haven't heard anything more from customer support since they told me to ask my dealer.

On you 5525, it supports both because the ball in the arm has both sized holes, right? Is that true of the top link (is that what it's called) also?

I have been looking into purchasing a 5525 and wanted it to be compatible for both CAT I & II attachments and the dealer said it could be ordered with both sized holes in the bushings and the quick attachment options were iMatch for Cat I and the "Economy Quick-Coupler", basically iMatch on steroids to carry the weight of Cat II.

That makes sense on the 5525 because the 5225 (and maybe the 5325 also) come standard with both holes. I wonder if it's possible to order the 4720 that way. Maybe I ought to check with my dealer before I finally order (which may be today).

In order to get Cat I/II compatibility on my 5525, I had to order the draft arms with the end extension option. That draft arm has the balls with 2 holes. The standard draft arm only has Cat II holes, at least that's what the salesman said. The top link is Cat II only, so you have to use a bushing with Cat I tools. As for I-Match, the hooks on I-Match hitches are actually Cat III sized. I have Cat I-to-Cat III bushings on all my tools to make them compatible with my I-Match and Speeco Quick Hitch.
