Well I posted in land clearing to get an idea of what people are running. I was liking the Wallenstein but my father likes the dr. He wants it now and a local dealer has one. Said they have a six month buyback. It is supposed to do up to 5 inches. Just wondering if anyone has run one of these. And is that too much HP for it?

Well it should be enough hp, as I run my DR chipper with the X749 lawn mower. Doesn't seem to slow the motor down much if any. If I were to buy a chipper for my 4520 it would be much larger just to be able to feed the crooked branches through faster.

I think he should go larger too. But once the old man wants it you can't change it. I'm 35 and he's 66 so we differ as most father and sons do.

I guess my job is just to see if he wil want that buyback. Got a lotta stuff to clear at his place. We will test it

For my work a chipper is a crapshoot, sometimes it is worthwhile other times not. I use it the most on jobs where hauling the branches out would cost me more time than chipping them up.

A DR chipper has a slow feed rate compared to a larger chipper this is more of an expense to me than the branch size limitation. Working by myself it does save me alot of walking stacking and pileing up though. In the spring I can mount it on the mower and drive around the jobs picking up branches shedded by the trees on the lawns. Makes quick work of it for the most part.

I really don't think he'll need the buy back. DR usually sells pretty nice stuff. Their chippers are actually manufactured by MacKissick, who've been making chippers for decades. There definitely isn't anything 'wrong' with the DR, it's just that he should really have a chipper that will use the tractor's potential....... something like a Wallenstein BX 62R. I think that as long as there is some type of built in safety on the DR...... shear bolt, slip clutch, or belts to slip, he will be fine with the DR behind his tractor.

Check the DR's specs for maximum PTO HP. I'm going to guess the 4720 has too much power. By that, I mean the tractor would continue driving the chipper when it (the chipper) jams (and should stall the tractor). If the chipper is belt driven, the belts should slip...but a direct drive unit might be a problem.
Just something to consider...

Good point. I did look it up and max is 65 horse. The 4720 is 58 at the pto I think. Also saw that it has a slip clutch on it.

Doesn't matter now. He called me this am on his way to get it. I guess we are the same. Once we get something on our mind we gotta get it. He has the dr field mower and loves it, so I think that's why he went with them. Actually I have his dr at my house now. ;-)
