Deere 4710/reverser, JD 318 (still needs TLC), JD LT160
OK, finally got out to the closest dealer to talk business. He gave me a basic quote for a 4710 setup. Discount seems 'ok', nothing to do handstands over, but not bad for this area (Deere tends to be high around here).

If the dealer can find one (more later) I'll probably tweak the exact options list but for now:

4710, DSCV, Reverser, R1's, 460 FEL, Ballast Box, Bucket Level Indicator, LX6 Rotary w/slip clutch & laminated tire, chain shields. Rear tires filled w/Rim Guard. Free pickup/deliver first year of warranty. (I'm 25 miles away).

With all freight, setup, and discounts almost exactly 26K before sales tax. I work that out as right around 15% off of list before rebates and throw in Rim Guard and the shlepping to and from for any repairs.

Like I said, sounds like a reasonable price, not fantastic, not awful.

Opinions?

(Now to find out if he can find one for me.)

Tim,

As you said the price is good at 15% off MSRP. You could do worse.

If you haven't already, consider upgrading to the heavy duty bucket. This advice was given to me when I was spec'ing out my 4310. Only $100 difference on the 4310 bucket and I'm told it makes a big difference.

Also, if you can fit it to your budget, consider adding the Third Selective Control Valve kit ($200) and Power Beyond ($210).

Both will add a lot of versatility to your tractor and are much cheaper to add now instead of latter.

Good luck,

Jeff

Jeff said it well!

I love the MX6

The R1s are great.

Maybe they'll find you a Hydro!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll second the vote for a heavy duty bucket - I've got both and the "regular" duty is lighter. I've mounted a toothbar on the lighter bucket and it's working out fine, but it isn't nearly as solid as the heavy duty bucket. BTW - I had them put a replaceable edge on it as well.

Good luck if you end up getting a 4710, it is a dam fine tractor.

Thought I would throw in my thoughts, as I got my 4710 this past January, and have put close to 85 hours on it already. First, if your willing to go a little far afield for your tractor, try JDEquipment in Ohio. They ship all over, even to the west coast. I got mine there, and got a great deal. But, you might want to stick to a local dealer - your call there. My deal was in the 23-24% off I think.

Second, I would go with the heavy duty bucket with replaceable cutting edge. It gives you more options down the road. Same with the 3rd SCV. I put a grapple on my bucket, and am **** glad I got both. Bolted the grapple on the top of the HD bucket, and use the third SCV to run it. Had no intention to when I bought the tractor, but am glad it was there once I needed it. If you look at used tractors, it's always easy to spot the standard duty buckets. They're the ones all bent up!

Third, I have a ballast box with extension on the back of mine, and feel plenty stable without filled tires. I got over 1200 lbs in it, and like that I can put in on or take it off as I want. I would want filled tires if I were picking up heavy loads really high, but for the work I'm doing, that's not an issue and the weight I have is sufficient. I'm clearing land, and moving large pine trees to burn piles. Don't know what your doing, but you might want to reconsider the filled tires.

Fourth, you might want to consider some front suitcase weights. The loader on the tractor comes off really easy, and mowing without it is great. But you need weight on the front. Then you can also use them in the ballast box and to weigh down a box blade or other implement.

Speaking of box blades or other implements, I could have saved a good amount of money if I had bought my boxblade and landscape rake when I bought the tractor, but I didn't. So you might want to look at your needs now and in the future, and shop accordingly. I wish I had.

And finally, I can't express how much I love my ehydro. It makes all work so much easier. Mowing, loader, grading, etc. If you can get past the whine, it's great.

So, just wanted to chime in with my experience. It's a great machine - lots of power, comfortable, easy on fuel, and just plain fun.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. As I mentioned, this was a config the salesman came up with himself - I have a few 'field options' to add if they can even find me a 4710 (or 4610 as fallback).

At the very least I do intend to add the 3rd SCV - routed to the rear, draft control, and the extendable draft links. Power Beyond is a 'maybe' for now - I will most likely add it down the road when and if I can add a 48 hoe but until then I wouldn't have much use for it. HD drilled edge bucket too. Forgot to ask if they would weld up some hooks for me and what that would run. FIL's an ex-millwright and has the welding equipment so that's no crisis.

I did have an interesting conversation with the salesman regarding our planned usages - and while I'm NOT trying to start the 4,012th hydro-vs-gear-war the salesman was most emphatic that a hydro would be the wrong choice for us . Reason - I want to keep in my plans the ability to do 'light' tillage (plow/disk/cultivation) and he simply stated that as good as a hydro is at so many things - heavy draft work will 'burn it up'. (His words). I felt I probably wanted a reverser anyway - but before I even mentioned this he had zero hesitation in crossing off the hydro if I was really going to use the tractor for tillage.

This dealership is fairly large and covers a good-sized range of equipment. Inside they had maybe two dozen lawn/garden tractors. Outside they had that many CUTs of various sizes right up to 5000 and 6000 series stuff, plus the usual larger ag implements.

They were pretty busy so after after talking inside for a bit we grabbed a set of keys and he basically left me alone to try out what I wanted while he covered some other customers. Conveniently parked side-by-side were a 4310 hydro, 4510 reverser, and 4610 hydro so it was easy to make back-to-back comparisons. The hydro obviously has some finesse advantages but the reverser (first I've ever driven of that type) was dirt simple to use as well. Oddly I didn't notice very much hydro 'whine' but then I wasn't straining these tractors either.

The contrasts between the mid-sized and large-frame units were interesting. I know on paper the large-framed takes a foot more turning radius and is slightly longer - but I deliberately tried to get a feel for manuvering in the tightest quarters there - threading through the parked equipment, 3-point turns and the like - and I couldn't really notice very much difference. On the other hand there was a big difference in the smoothness and feel of the 4-cylinders over the 3-cylinder 4310.

As far as loading the tires - I'm not firmly decided on that. This dealer is used to PA conditions (read hills/side slopes) and that combined with the loader pointed him toward fill. I have to think about that more. Since he does use Rim Guard, there is the option of using less than the classic 75% full approach.

Not sure about the LX6 either. That starts out being a fairly pricey light-duty cutter, but there really isn't any other Deere-brand implement I'd want right now other than the FEL. Adding the LX6 opens up the $300 rebate Deere's running right now. That plus the 15% discount probably makes the actual price for the LX6 more reasonable for a light unit with a slip clutch and full chains. This dealer is also the local Land Pride outlet so there are those options as well.

Tim,

My neighbor has a 4600 with power reverser and loves it.

As far as the Power Beyond, if you are having the 3rd SCV installed you should consider installing the power beyond at the same time. The dealer must remove the right rear tire and fender to get to the hydraulic system. I was told by my dealer that was the most time consuming part of the job.

Just a thought.

Forgot to mention - just for grins I did ask the dealer what he thought of running a 'small' square baler with a 4710. His answer - it would do it but it would be a bit of a ride, you'd feel the plunger for sure, but he didn't feel it would actually damage the 4710.

He did mention that their guys were going to the briefing on the 4720 next week. He said they didn't know much of anything about it yet except that as someone else mentioned here the hp was supposed to be up to 58 - and he thought it was a turbo.

My bad, I thought you'd said MX6. I had an LX6, but took it back. I was sure I would smash it all up with those thin skirts. It was to expensive to end up looking like a shinny can /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. But with $300 more off, i dunno. I think the MX6 is a better cutter, since it has a flywheel for a stump jumper , and spins at significantly higher RPMs. Slip clutch and chains are a must.

I was funnin' you on the Hydro. I love mine, and I doubt that you would really have trouble with it unless you were doing really heavy tillage, but the reverser is a fine machine, as well.

Jeff - that's a good point. I don't think the Power Beyond is all that expensive in any case - doing it now with the 3rd SCV may make the most sense.

Question - has anyone ever bothered with extending the basic warranty a year or two? I would hazard a guess that if your dealer is pretty prompt and thorough about any needed repairs, after two years the little stuff should be sorted out. Unfortunately while I need the tractor now for basic property maintenance the real work won't start until next year and I'll have already burned off a year of warranty.
