Have a 455 that Steering control Unit that is leaking hyd fluid, last mowing season thought it was the o-rings on the lines going into the steering control , I replaced them but now it looks like the leak is on top of the (SCU).
1. is this common?
2. is the SCU hard to rebuild (o-rings and seals) anything special to look-out for?
3. Do you need the special tool that Eaton-Char-lynn calls for?
4. I have taken the Steering contol unit out and back in last spring what a job!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for any information

I just ran through the 20+ steps in the service tech manual for repair of the steering valve, and didn't see anything about a special tool needed in those steps.
Do you have that manual? Or are you reviewing something else from Eaton-Char-Lynn ??

beenthere,
Thanks for the reply, I do have a manual but I did'nt look at it yet. I was reading on line
at the Eaton-char-Lynn sight for the series 5 SCU.. It states that a special 2 piece tool is needed to
insert a seal in the inside top of the housing.

There are 5 or 6 pages with step by step procedure in the tech manual. Looks to be a pretty good run down, but hope I don't have to go through the procedure. :)

Will be interested to learn how it goes for you.

Will let you know when the rebuilt is done, It will be awhile because of the cold weather and have not
ordered the seal/ o-ring kit yet. Will keep you posted.

Well rebuilt (replaced all Orings, quad seal and dust seal ) on the steering control unit. It was not that bad of a job, hardest part was getting the unit off the tractor. Cleaned outside of the unit before starting and was really careful about not getting (dirt on inside parts of the unit).used white cloths to lay parts on at
disassembly. The quad seal was leaking , it was a lot harder to the touch then the new one.and was hard to replace back in the housing without twisting or cutting it on the counter bore it sets in. I worked slow
double check everthing it was not that bad of a job. Now to get it back in the tractor. Stew
