My 4500 (diesel) is not charging (good battery, generator tests well). How do I diagnose a bad voltage regulator? I also noticed there are two wires to the back of the generator. The larger one runs to the regulator AND seems to be grounded. Is this correct or is it shorted? Help.

That unit should use a 12v lucas genny.

There should be 2 wires.. one is the armature ( charge) wire.. the other is the field.. and should be on a spade terminal.

How do you know the genny tests well? what did you do? Motor test? full field?

Have you polarized it?

Polarize the B-Circuit system by jumpering power to the field terminal.

Some lucas regs get dirty sticky contacts... replacement usually is about 25$.

post back... these are super simple to work on.

If you have a sticky reg that otherwise works.. i've seen some peple put a full-field button on the dash.. after starting they hit the button to provide full power to the field.. this in turn makes max charge current.. this usually makes the regualtor nap to so to speak and close the chattering cutout.. etc..

The generator (it is a 12v lucas) was bench tested. How do you polarize it (I'm not sure what "Polarize the B-Circuit system by jumpering power to the field terminal" means to do)and what does that do? Thanks, Jay.

Bench tested eh? without any specifics of what tests were performed.. that and a nickle will get you 5 cents worth of candy. Max amp test with full field? motor test? growler? etc..

And what does it do? It polarizes it.. ( It establishes a residual magnetic field in the field pieces so that it can generate power upon spinup. also sets charge polarity)

One more time..

Jumper power to the field terminal. ( ya got choices of power and ground.. .. polarity is irrelevant here... thus.. choose whichever battery post which is NOT tied to the chassie.... that's 'power'

I told you where the field terminal was...it's one of 2 spades back there.. ya got a small one and a big heavy wired one.. field is obviously going to be the one with the small gague wire...

You probably need to get the correct owners and CNH shop manual for this unit.. or at least an I&T fo-31 that covers the 3000/4000 series units.. etc. perhaps an fo-41 ... it handles the x6xx units.. your unit falls inbetween that coverage as they are aftermarket manuals.. etc..

Good deal.

If your lucas reg is flaky.. it may do that from time to time ( need to be repolarized.. or full fielded. ).. My ford 5000 is like that. I have a new reg for it.. but want to squeeze every last electron out of the original one before I toss it. I wired up a momentary push button switch in a spare hole the previous owner left me on the dash.. after i start the 5000, if it has set for more than a few weeks, soemtimes the charge lamp will flicker... a 1-second blip of the exciter button gets it in order... One of these days I'll replace the reg...
