Guys,
I've bought my tractor with turf tires and I'm considering replacing them with R4 tires. Most of my use is mowing, but I've gotten into some soft spots and it turns those turf tires into chocolate donuts real quick!

So does anybody mow grass with the R4s? How are they on the lawn? Do they tear it up?

Also I need some technical help. I think the R4s take a different rim size than the turfs. Can somebody take a look at their rims and let me know what size they are? It's stamped on the rim. I have 20Hx11W on the rear and 15x6 on the front. What are the R4 sizes?

Thanks,
Ron

Ron, I am unsure at this point what the rim size is, I will check a little later.

As for the R4's on the grass, NO PROBLEMS. As long as I am in 2wd I have yet to mark the grass.

Good luck.

I have mowed using a 2700 lb tractor with AG tires. My dad had the same tractor I had but his was 2WD with turf tires. I could tear the yard up if I wanted to with his tractor. It is all in the technique. Once I tried to mow my yard with his because the yard was kinda damp. Those front wheels ate turf everytime I turned. Just remember to mow when it is dry and keep it in 2WD.

I have R4's on my 4310. They don't tear up the lawn at all, even mowing through standing water. The gage wheels on my 72" RFM will leave deep ruts whenever the ground is soft. A MMM would definitely be an advantage.

All the wheel and tire sizes can be found on the JD web site.

I have a new 4410 with R4 tires. The rear wheels are 19.5 x 13.00. The fronts are 14 x 6. I cross and turn on my dry lawn (a very nice lawn I might add) with a full loader bucket without any problems.

I think the real truth is that it is only a spinning/sliding tire that tears up the lawn. Up to a certain weight point - as long as you're not spinning the tire - I don't think R1's or R4's are going to tear up the turf any more than an R3 tire. I've left many more marks with turf tires than bar tires on light garden tractors because the bar tires didn't spin and the turfs would occasionally squirt on a tight turn or backing up. Put enough weight on the tractor and the ag tires will leave dents even without spinning - but if the ground's that soft and the tractor that heavy - then the turfs would probably have left their own track - just one that less obviously matches the tread pattern.

Dang... none of the rim sizes are the same between turf tires and R4s. Buying new rims with the tires gets pricey quick.

Anybody out there planning to swap our their R4s for any reason???

I have a 2210 with R1's and have no problem on my lush 1/3 acre suburban lawn. Just make sure you don't spin your tires and you will be fine. I had to have the R1's due to lots of clay on the property I am building my new log home on. They have done a great job in the clay soil for me.

Ron,

I have R4's on my 4310 and mow with it. As others have said, they work fine and do not tear up the lawn unless you spin the tires. Mow in 2WD only. The fronts will cut if turning in 4WD even if the tires aren't spinning. Actually the front tires turn faster than the rears so they are "spinning" or slipping a little when 4WD is engaged.

Another lawn tearup condition is fast stopping. I was testing the brakes (tractor was new) by going at a moderate speed and hitting the brakes to see how fast I could expect the tractor to stop. Well, it didn't stop all that quick but afterwards I noticed tear-up spots where I had made the stops. I've also ripped up turf if I reversed direction to aggressively. I had turf tires on a JD 755 before and under the same conditions as above they would leave smear marks in the turf but not actually rip it out.

It has been damp all summer. Not soggy but the ground has never gotten rock hard. I got my 4310 in July. Mowing with the R4's definitely left marks. No tearing, but the tire tread imprint could be seen everywhere. Very noticeable. Looked like my lawn had been mowed with a bulldozer. The majority of the profile was in the grass so after a day or two it is no longer visible.

just mow when it is dry, stay in 2wd and don't turn sharp or fast.
