Here's my scenario (be prepared for too much information!):

I have been haggling on the price for a 4210 with 420 FEL, LX5, and 9" Post Hole digger for a few weeks now. I'm at $18,500 with a dealer I like. I'm ready to close the deal, EXCEPT that I keep thinking I should go with the 4310, if for no other reason than it's just not very much more money and it will handle the 430 FEL. This brings me to my dilemma: the 4210 is already too large for some of the areas I want to use it in... the 4310 just makes matters worse. But I had a thought: isn't the only dimensional difference between the two the wheels and tires? Can I just ask the dealer to install 4210 R4s on a 4310? I thought there might be some good reason why not, and that you folks might know it.

Thanks,
Nathan

My first blush - tell the dealer your quandry, & see if they'd demo a machine for you. I'd sure hate to downgrade the 4310 and then figure out I'd have been OK.

Also, are you sure that R1's won't work? They are 8 position, and can go more narrow than the R4s. I thought I wanted R4s, but got the R1s, with the option of trading. I really like them, and am glad I got them. To me, they are not as aggressive as older R1s.

Just ideas... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Now, do you want me to answer as to which tractor you'd be happier with?

I agree with rockyridgefarm. Get the 4310. You will get used to it and the added size. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Do any 4310 owners out there own less than 3 acres of land ?
I am very interested in either a 4210/4310, but had a dealer
tell me that "is an awful lot of tractor for you 2.1 acres...."
....so I thought I would do an unofficial poll and see if I am
the only weirdo out there who wants a larger tractor for
a lot my size /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If I recall properly... We have never (on TBN) heard anybody say the have bought too big of a tractor! The recommendation is "buy as big as you can afford "(and then some!)!
I own a 4310... it is the same physical size as the 4210 but has more HP, etc. If money is no object (it's not that much more!) then go for the 4310! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Actually, there have been people who have bought to big. It's easy to do. To be more accurate, the size of your lot should be secondary to what you plan to do. I have had a D4 on a 1 acre lot that used all the D4's energy. I have moved massive amounts of material here at my place and could have pretty much purchased anything realizing at some point, the smaller tractor would not only be slower, but take quite a beating. If mowing constitutes a majoriy of your needs and you need mobility, don't over buy.

Mowing does constitute alot of my need, but so does comfort /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I also will be doing snow removal and level some ground, ripping out
rocks, etc.......I am torn between buying an FEL for my 4100, or just
waiting nother year and then upgrading to a 4210/4310

We've got a 4310 with about 2.5 acres (soon hopefully 4!) over here on the west side of the Cascades. The 4310 is a bit HEAVY for a lot of the work we do on this lot size (compacts the soil when repeatedly travelling over it during wet winter months), and we had a hard time deciding between the 4310 and a 4110. However, (1) we needed the bigger tractor for log hauling and road grading on our 30 acres over on the east side of the mtns., and (2) the 4110 would have been too small for ripping out many of the stumps and rocks even on our little 2.5 acres over here on the west side. If we were planning on doing mostly mowing, however, only on our 2.5 acres we would definitely have gotten the smaller tractor, and hired out for the bigger jobs.

garchib, The only opinion that matters on what size tractor you need is yours. (except, possibly the wife's. if you happen to be so blessed) It appears that you have already owned a tractor, so you probably have a pretty good idea of what you would like to be able to do with it. I have to agree with most of the people here that it makes sense buy the biggest tractor that will perform the tasks that you desire.

I have 1.25 acres and a 4310. In six months I have put 240 hours on it. I have cleared my lot, and two others about the same size. I have been impressed with this tractor since the first time I sat on it. I don't believe for a second that anything smaller could have done the same job, in any realistic length of time. This tractor has worked hard for almost every one of those hours and has done everything that I wanted to do without a strain. I would recommend this tractor to anyone that can fit it around their obstacles. Besides, bigger is, almost always, better. Buy the one that you like the most!

(I really wanted a 6420)

Thanks for everybody's input.......I have to say that
this site is amazing and that tractor people are a very
cool breed of people ! Especially the ones that have
the green variety /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
