I read in the service manual John deere had trouble with the rear end housings breaking due to flexing stress at the transmission crossbar. I'm afraid today I discovered mine has suffered from this flaw. I took the left rear tire off and the first thing I noticed was a chunk of the rear end mounting section broken off and separated from the housing. I dont know if it was like this from the previous owner or if it happened recently. The previous owner obviously had trouble with the axle rotating because the idiot tried to weld the cast aluminum rear end housing to the steel frame. :confused2:
What are my options and how serious is this for the rear end? The housing is not leaking where it broke. Right now there is nothing holding the front of the housing to the crossbar. I think there are supposed to be two bolts and the other one was missing. Can I secure the housing to the crossbar by replacing the missing bolt and be okay running it with the broken section?
