I want to change the transmission & front axle oil in my 4120. According to JD online manual, it uses

Transmission Oil Low Viscosity HY-GARD (JDM J20D)
Transmission and Hydraulic System (PowrReverser Models) 38.9 L (10.3 gal)
Transmission and Hydraulic System (eHydro Models) 36.1 L (9.6 gal)

Front Axle Oil Low Viscosity HY-GARD (JDM J20D)
Front Axle 5.0 L (1.3 gal)

Two questions

1) On Amsoil site it lists two oils that meet spec ISO46 SAE 30, and ATH SAE 5-30, this seems to be a low viscosity esp for use in Florida, and in a front axle.

2) 1.3 Gal seems like a lot of fluid in the little front end, is this right?

Any thoughts?

Thank you
Glenn

You asked for thoughts...here is my thoughts, grew up on a farm, been around tractors all my life, seen this first hand, most noticeably/recenly on a Kubtoa L Series GST...

Not saying Amsoil isnt good stuff...BUT, i'd run the Genuine JD Hy-Gard without a doubt....Not counting Engines, I'd run whatever the OEM Oil is on ANY piece of equipment in their transmissions...

8934,

The front axle of my 4610 takes 1.3 gallons of hydraulic oil, so that sounds about right for yours.

I don't know anything about Amsoil.

My manual recommends using either JD Low Viscosity HY-GARD or standard JD HY-GARD depending on the ambient air temperature. I use Chevron 1000 THF which meets the JDM J20C spec (that is, for standard HY-GARD) because it doesn't get cold here. I'd think you could safely use a J20C spec oil there in Florida unless your owner's manual recommended otherwise.

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks for the feedback.

I cant check my manual since the dealer lost it.
They have one ordered, but I have not got it yet.

I got the data I posted from online manual, but 5-30 oil seemed light for a front end in Florida.
