If any one has an idea what to look for, or if it's a non-issue, I'd appreciate the input;

I have a 4115 with 200+ hr.'s now. Not one problem except the defective fan belt (at about 20 hr.s, ...can't remember exactly but very early on). However, every time I'm climbing back up the hill to my yard, I smell the very distinct scent of burning rubber. To make it up the hill, I have to run in 4WD at about 2k rpm so as not to spin or lug down. I have, repeatedly, checked the fan belt for glazing and tension. Seems to be no problem there. I don't know of any where else to look for wear that would produce that distinctive smell. That particular use is the only time I smell it, and I smell it every time. I've worked this poor little tractor pretty hard with the FEL and BH. No such smell, that I've noticed, any other time. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

One idea:

Are you running up the hill in high gear?

Going up a steep hill in high is likely hitting the pressure relief of the hydro. The longer and faster you run it like that, the more heat it makes. All that heat is dumped into the hydraulic oil and the oil cooler may not be able to keep it at normal operating temp. When the oil gets hot you can smell it.

The only time I've smelled burnt rubber on my 4115 was when the 3 point hitch was rubbing against the rear tires.

The centering links had come loose and allowed the arms to rub against the tire.

Is it the 4wd? Use the fel to raise the front wheels off the ground. Spin them by hand, engine off and see if there might be a lubrication issue with the seals there. I had a rubber squeak there and sprayed silicone lube in (on the advice of a JD tech) and it took care of it...

you could also raise all four off the ground, with the loader and the hoe, to isolate whether it is the front or rear drive. If you get squished doing this, i get your tractor, since it was my idea... Actually, I have done this, on pavement and it is pretty safe...

Funny how this issue comes up. I just noticed the same smell when I was tilling with my 2210..Tilling deep, in four wheel drive over 2500 rpms..Just as you discribed a faint smell of burnt rubber. I asked my sales man about it (he owns alot of compact utility units), he thought I was nuts..Could it be the boot on the front driveshaft?

<font color="green">Come to think of it I detect this same sort of smell with my 2210 when going up one of my steeper hills.

You guys aren't confusing this with the sweet smell of a diesel chugging under load, are you? Is there increased smoke with the smell?

<font color="green">Nope. It definitely smells like burnt rubber. However there is increased smoke as well. Is this sweet smell you mention close at all to the smell of burnt rubber?

Keeney,

No, not in high range. Only use that for unloaded spin up or down the driveway or road. Thanks for the input but, definetely burnt rubber smell, not overheated hydraulic.
