Equipment just got its first workout in 6 in or so of semi-wet snow. Interesting how digging & moving a bucket of sand hardly causes the diesel to work, but taking continous full bite of wet snow with the blower will cause RPMs to dip/engine to lug a bit. Found one minor issue. The quick tach will lift the blower assembly to the point where the angle on the front PTO U joint is so great that the knuckles hit each other. Not a pleasant noise, not to mention the obvious abuse of the part. Shaft is installed correctly; at least it pushed on to where the disconnects latch solid. Anyone with a broom/snowblower set up notice any sort of factory installed stop set up on their quick tach? Mine came in pieces from the dealer. Maybe time to fabricate and weld on a stop, but before I do wanted to check and see if mine is missing something. Thanks

I guess the first thing to do would be to double and triple check the assembly of that mid pto kit,, where the carrier bearing for the front drive shaft parts is. If I remember, there is that short assembly the mounts into that steel box, that has the bearings and shaft in it. There was always some confusing assembling that assembly, and where the bearing flanges go etc.
After that, you may want to modify that upstop on the snowblower, so that the unit doesn't lift as far. They do lift
too far IMHO for the U joints, and I have seen some premature failures due to that. In the mean time, DON'T lift it
all the way up!
Let us know how you make out.....

Hey Dutch, thanks for the confirmation. Good advice, but its real hard not to lift it all the way, at least occasionally.
I pulled the unit off last night. The bearing carrier you mentioned has the bearing in the highest possible position, which would minimize the angle on the front PTO shaft knuckles at full lift. It can’t go any higher; when installing the blower I had to drop the mid mount mower steel frame rails as there was less than 1/16 inch clearance between them and the long PTO shaft that runs between the bearing carrier and the mid PTO.
I agree with your assessment & think the quick tach cylinder just has about 1 inch too much lift to it. Time to either modify the cylinder mounting points or weld in a stop. I’m not the best fabricator, so probably a stop…. Thanks again

I attached a pic of the quick tach, bearing carrier--you can see front PTO shaft and lift piston.

Al,
The picture I posted was of that bearing assembly, was that done at the dealer? or did you assemble all of that yourself?

You mention the cylinder lifting too high, maybe a simple fix would be a 1" piece of pipe around the cylinder rod to limit how far that cylinder can retract? Is that a feasable option to restrict the lift height? (I'm no expert on hydraulic cylinders, and don't know if this would be a bad thing to do to it)

Good luck

Hi Dutch. Thanks for posting the pic. My carrier came assembled and bearings are positioned as are the one's in your pic. The quick tach was delivered in pieces, but I had an assembled one to compare it to (long story)
I thought about a pipe sleeve over the hyd rod, but don't think putting that pressure on the cylinder end would be a good idea. As a temporay fix, decided to cut a piece of black gas pipe to lenght (TBD) and bolt the top of it to the front weight-carrier bracket. Carrier has a hole in the right place; this should work until I have the time to pull the quick tach and install a more permanent fix. ( an L angle welded to the side with a adjustment bolt).
Check you e-mail, I have a question about buying a set of forks from you.

ok,
not a problem

that idea might work well,
if you have seen some of the older 47"
snowblowers, they had an upstop that
extended out further from the back of the snowblower
that would but up against the tractor frame, they just
didn't seem to go as far with this setup for the compact
tractors for some reason...

thanks

Mine does the same thing on my 4100 on both the snowblower and the broom. I just learned to stop the PTO before lifting or not lift so high.
