Stopped at the JD store to check if any additional mufflers were available for my tractor. They suggested trying a new muffler ( cost $280.00 ) non refundable if it isn't quieter I might add. I have 120 hours on the machine so it can't be worn out. It just has such a sharp sound to it without hearing protection a headache is only minutes away..
Anyone have a suggestion on adding or changing this ? My 455 was quieter and had a ton of hours. I don't believe mufflers have a break in period that I'm aware of.

As I understand it, just about any muffler that fits could be fitted as back pressure is not as much an issue as it is on gas engines.

That being said, there are many glass packed after market car mufflers that could be tried and that at very reasonable prices.

However with those low hours your warrantee could become an issue.

Over the years, being cheap (conservative) I have welded up mufflers from many odd sources like small butane tanks, 3-4" electrical conduit etc.
A suitable pipe with drilled holes in a 'can' packed with steel wool or fiberglass has often duplicated and or improved from the origional.

Also for moderate costs there are some advertisers on this site that offer 'generic' replacement mufflers. (and not @ $280.00)

Don't know specifically which engine your tractor has in it, but much of the noise may not be exhaust. One way to check is get a lenght of flex exhaust pipe and route it away from the tractor. Then check the noise levels. If it is 'traditional' injector pump system, then much of the noise may be from it. The injector pump has a sharp clap sound. I was in the shop one day when they were running a pump on the test stand (driven by electric motor) and it was almost as noisy as the tractor it was off of. My old 4300 with the yanmar engine was much quieter than the current 4520 with the JD engine, but it stll was in excess of the time weighted average curve for no hearing protection at 2 hours.
