4110 JD
two or 3 questions:
I was at my dealer today and asked if JD sold a grapple, he said yes but he knew I had a 4110 and he said you needed a beefer tractor like the 4000. I have been thinking of a 3320 or 3520 trade up.

1. will 4110 handle a grapple.
2. for that fact will the 3000 trator handle it
3. what about after market for either tractor (4110 or 3000 line)

I want to be able to handle logs 6in to 30 inch wide, of course might have to cut the larger logs shorter in lenght.

Does any one have or know????

thanks

The question seems a bit dubious. What grapple do you have in mind and how much does it weigh? How far out beyond the pivot points will the load be carried? What is the lift capacity of your FEL now, and by subtraction, how much will the capacity be reduced with the grapple you have in mind?

Seems the dealer was right, if you want something that is a bit more practical.

Logs have diameter and length, as they are similar to a cylinder. Which dimension are you calling 6" to 30"? the diameter or the length?

Obviously you can put one on like Jason, but I suspect (Jason please feel free to jump in here), that a 30" log (depends like beenthere is mentioning diameter and I would suggest to keep the type of wood in mind, because a good red oak will be very heavy) would be possible, but might get the machine upset quickly given the size of a 4110. I think if you are going to play/work with items that large you might consider a bigger unit that has more weight and physical size.

Due to the weight issues of grapple setups, I probably would only mount a grapple on an existing bucket (or forks). I have used my setup to handle ash logs (16" dia and about 16' long) Often I find the limiting factor on length is the width between existing trees. If you had short enough pieces, I suppose you could pick up a 30" dia log.

thanks folks for the advise:
I am just checking into a grapple, I do not have one picked out yet and not sure where to start. I just know the wood i work with most often is large 30 in down to 6 inch, now I just cut up the large stuff to a lenght that fits in my bucket. But smaller logs I would love to pick up in 6 foot lenghts etc. So I guess Iam in need a basic help. My 4110 does not have loaded tries, I just use a rear blade for wait.

I would love to know all that you all know.

thanks

Jason,

Can you estimate what your costs were to get the grapple up and going? It looks great.

Chop-

I had $310 in the diverter valve (Fasse-thru JD dealer)
I had about $75 in hoses/fittings (brother-in-law make hoses)
I had $420 in grapple (bought from A Tatro thru Ebay)
I had about $100 in steel to make the grapple mount.

Total- $905 and worth it!

I also made a FEL snowplow, so the diverter works the angle on that.

I use the grapple a lot, I am clearing some land. I dig out trees with the hoe then turn around, pick them up and either cut them up or haul to burn pile. Wouldn't do without ii.

you post makes me want to get out and hit the woods.

Do you have any pics of your set up. I have no skills in making this myself, did you have plans or just work it up in your head.

What amount of wieght do you think you can lift with your grapple.

thanks

Roger-

The only pictures I currently have are the ones I posted in the thread I linked to earlier in this thread.

I don't often stop to take pictures in action as then I have to get off the tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Basically some box tubing and plate material is all you need to mount the grapple as I did.

As to what it will lift? Probably more than I should. I forget what the grapple and mount weigh- maybe 125 lbs?- so that much less than without it I guess.

I picked up a cherry tree stump (14" dia) with the entire ball of roots (including dirt) and moved it yesterday!

Awesome attachment! I've never removed it since I installed it, but it just requires removing 3 pins and unhooking 2 hoses.

If you're playing in a wooded area you won't believe how helpful a grapple is.

BTW- I had no plans, just pictures/ideas gleaned from others at TBN!
