I had an interesting time changing the oil in my 4100.After the first 30 hrs, I drained it and put back the required amount, 2.8 qts along with a new filter. I checked the dipstick and found it was overfilled by about 1/2 qt. so drained it out. checked with the local dealer and he tells me 3 qts. I figure I must have screwed up so I change it again with new filter! Again overfilled. I sent an e-mail to JD and being the A type I am, I also called them and spoke to a lovely young lady who assured me that I must check the oil with the dipstick NOT fully inserted but resting on the stopper. so i ran it for a day and the got back the e-mail from JD. This young man told me to check the oil with stick all the way in and seated and not to overfill it. He says that JD calls for 2.8 qts when competely empty, not in the field. So out came the 1/2 qt. again. Anyone else have this problem?

Not yet but I plan to change the oil soon and I will make sure to watch the amount I put in. Hopefully someone will give us the exact amount I won't have this problem.

Gary,
Now you got me to wondering./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
Does one insert there dip stick all the way in,or just to the rubber stopper to check the engine oil?
Not even my Kubota manual tells, /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gifso I shall double check with my dealer!!

Thanks for the interesting tid bit.

BEEN THERE! DONE THAT! Gary had the exact same issues. There is no way that engine holds 2.8 quarts. With filter change it takes a little over 2 quarts. 2 quarts 8oz is more like it. The filter has been made smaller too because of clearance problems with the engine side cover/loader arms. I've also have the factory service manual and that has 2.3 quarts listed for oil capacity (with filter)in the engine specifications. vs. the 2.8 listed in the operators manual, AND TO CONFUSE THINGS EVEN MORE pg 3-61( oil pan removal) calls for 2.6 quarts oil capacity. Now let me tell you what I experienced. A leaking rear main seal 10 hrs after an oil change refilled with 2.8 QUARTS. Interesting coincidence to say the least. As for the dipstick it should be inserted all the way. I think the spec writer went to the same school the axle designer did. DFB

Thanks for the info. I will have to keep an eye for an oil leak now, at least its still under warranty!

I have had just about the same experiance. Now what I do is fill it with 2 quarts, then slowly add and checking with the dipstick until the fill line is reached. You have to allow a little bit of time for the oil to drain-down into the crankcase when doing this. What a pain. I think that changing the oil and filter takes a little less than 2.5 quarts.

Re: 4100

Better for what? The main competition for the 4100 is the Kubota B-7500 and the New Holland TC-18 or 21. All of these are good tractors for that size class. Really I would size the tractor to the use, particularly the implements you want to use, then shop the big 3 companies to compare along the same class of machine.

Just changed oil in my 4100 (my book says after the first 50 hours). I was sure glad I had read these submissions on oil changes. My 4100 took only two quarts to move the oil to the top of the dip stick (also replaced oil filter). If I had gone with the book I would also have overfilled the engine.
