Brother asked me to go look at a 2001 4100 w/410 FEL and 226 hrs, Ind tires and weight box. The dealer is selling it on consignment and wants $11900. The tractor looks new, but the loader looks like it has been setting outside, and the sidewalls on both rear tires are cracked all the way around on the outside like they are dry rotten, but the tractor itself doesn't look like it has set outside. The dealer said that the tractor was bought new there, but the rear tires and the loader didn't look like they matched the condition of the tractor, the loader didn't look abused, just stored outside and the tractor looked pampered. I was thinking they are about $2000 too high before I saw the condition of the tires. Is this tractor worth what they're asking, I know that my brother has got the fever bad and I hate to see him drop 12 big ones on a five year old tractor and then another $2500 for a MMM when for that kind of money he's real close to new with a warranty.

Only comparison I can find (JD4100) was E Bay
Item number: 7776546430

Check it out. Looks like a better deal than you described.

When I started looking a few months ago, my dealer had a brand new 4110
with loader for $13700. I think it is high.
On the tires, I remember the old 1950's Farmall Super C we used to have. We ran the cracked tires many years before we ended up replacing them. This was in the 80's and the tires were original. JC

I have seen prices or $10 - 12k for owner offered units with 200 plus hours, Dealrs take in trades for $7 - 8k, and then turn around and try to sell for $10 - 12 k, and then when some person off the street comes in and wants to trade up, they try to stay below $8k on units with less than 100 hours.

Talked to my brother last night, now he's thinking new 790 gear drive in that price range. He wants a tractor for loader work and mowing and he's never used a hydro tractor, I'm trying to steer him in that direction especially with a lot of loader use, so I talked him into coming over Sat. and using a gear tractor w/loader and a hydro w/ loader to do some work so he can see the difference between the two. I've got an area by a creek that has a lot of trees and limbs down, that will let him get a work out with the clutch and tranny.
I have been trying to steer him to this site so he can get some info, but he's...(I'm searching for some words here) not interested in newfangled stuff, hence the leaning toward the gear drive and the RFM. He works a lot and his reason for getting a tractor is to get more done in less time, he has a large yard with a lot of stuff to mow around and his 48in. Sears is taking too long.

I've got a 790 with RFM.
With a lot (your words) of obstacles, the RFM would be a bit of a hassle. The 790 does have a mid-PTO option, so he could get a mid-mount mower (the MMM for the 790 is a 60" unit).

As far as loader work, the hydro will save some time, but not really much. The 790's gear pattern puts 1st and reverse in line, so shifting is pretty quick.

However, the 790 has (with the 419 loader) about 700 lbs capacity at maximum lift height (88"). That may not meet his requirements. Of course, unless one is loading a dump truck, one probably does not care about maximum lift at maximum height. For moving most stuff (dirt or whatever I need to lift), the capacity at 4 feet is plenty. Downside...I'd love to add a grapple (with a lot of brush, a grapple would be a major asset..if I could afford one!), but adding a grapple would reduce the 790's lift capacity too much.

The 790 is a nice, simple tractor. It's definitely worth a look.

I bought my 98' 4100 off Ebay last Nov. for $9k. It came with the FEL, tires filled, and mid mount mower with just under 250 hours. Mine is also a gear shift.

I've already done a lot of work with it and it has been a great little tractor. I cleared snow in the winter with the FEL, I excavated recently for a new 30x40 garage I have going up (moved lots of dirt), I've mowed, etc...

How long has the 4100 been at the dealership, maybe they'll be willing to work on the price if they know your serious about buying something ;)

Well, brother didn't show up Saturday, but when I talked to him Friday, he had talked to the owner of the 4100 that the dealer is selling and $11000 is his bottom price. He did mention that he can get the 790 with a MMM but not with the Ind. tires, something about not enough room. I think he's decided against this particular 4100, he's going to be on vacation the first two weeks of July, maybe he can get some real serious looking done then.
