4020 John Deere tractor
We were driving this tractor down the road and all the sudden the shredder dropped and steering quit . Checked fluid and it's full but now hydraulics . Someone said it could be the pump . Anything else that could be checked first? $$$$

Can you hear the pump turning when the engine is running? Check the drive coupler from crank pully to pump shaft. Sounds like maybe the pump stopped turning.

I'll second checking frt hyd pump drive coupler. The coupler has been known to get loose on pump shaft and not turn pump. If 3pt or scv powered impl. dropped when pump quit then that hyd function has leaking valves.

Agreed, and this is likely to be a two fold problem in that the leaking valves kept the pump in stroke constantly.

We've had this happen before and my guess is that its the stroke control valve. They stick sometimes and the dealer should have a tool that will take care of the problem. If it was the pump coupler it would have made a nocking noise long before it went out.

I worked for a JD dealer for 21 years several years back and I'm unaware of any "tool" to correct a sticking stroke control valve other than a destroking screw(parts key #6).AR33249 SCREW,HYD PUMP SHUT-OFF,ASSMY/FIELD ADD 15.48 USD

"Tool" can mean many things to a Farmer.

You need a de-stroke vavle like tx jim said. Get one. Install it on hyd pump, then with engine running, screw it all the way in then back out. Should fix it.

Your tractor may already have one installed. They are fairly common. Look on top of the hyd pump for a little T handled screw theaded into a nut @ the front of the pump.

I didn't "come up with the destroking screw" idea. It was taught to me back in the 70's - late 80's while I was employed by a JD dealer as a service manager when I attended JD service schools at the JD branch warehouse in Dallas,Tx.
