Nope, couldn't say who makes the best one, but I was quite happy with the performance of my 4' Bush Hog Squealer.

I have a Rhino SE-4 that I'm happy with. Picked it up used from a friend for $250.00 (He used it 2 seasons on open pasture) Not a bad deal.

It'll cost you a bit more then a King Kutter, but I'd look at a Land Pride. I've a 5' unit...definitely well built.

I have a Fred Crain Agri Cutter 104 and it's a hoss. It's done everything I've asked it to do. You can get them at Davis Equipment Company in Ashland, KY.
I've had mine for going on 3 years with no trouble at all.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

I have a 4' cutter made by Busy Bee manufacturing. I bought it because that is what my dealer had sitting in his yard and I needed one. Is it a good model made by a good manufacturer? ... I don't know. What I do know is that it works, it has always worked and never been a problem. I use it on the pasture at the house about 3 times a year but that isn't what you would call really "hard mowing". I think your choice will depend on what you will be mowing with it as to whether you need a heavy duty model or can get by with something lighter. You don't need a model that is built to hack it's way through 3" saplings if all you are cutting is grass.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

I bought a used Woods 4' Last year and I would say that it is an absolute tank, and very heavy. I guess I am wondering if I had bought a cheaper brand ie King Cutter it might have been a better fit for my tractor in the fact that the lower quality might weigh less and require less counter balance. I have about 150lbs of suitcase weights on the front and it is barely enough. I am cutting just 4 or so acres with an Iseki 18 Horsepower diesel. Probably a smarter move would have been a quality 36" cutter for my limited needs.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

I would suspect one 4' cutter is as good as another. Any 4 footer should handle anything that a tractor small enough to require a 4 footer can knock down. I got a "Razor" 4 footer, ($479), about 3 years ago because that's what the dealer was selling. I think it was built in somebody's garage in South Ga. It's been as good as one could ask for, and with proper maintenance should last a loooong time.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

Frank, you gave me a good laugh anyway when you mention the Busy Bee. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Now I know nothing about a Busy Bee and they may be an excellent product, but several years ago when I was shopping for a rotary cutter, I started out looking for a used one and found an add for a Busy Bee in the Thrifty Nickel and called the guy.

He gave me quite a sales pitch about how great it was and in excellent condition, but didn't have a manual, didn't know where they were made, and didn't know where you could find a dealer. He said a neighbor used to buy several and set them in his front yard and sell them and that's where he got it, but the neighbor doesn't do that anymore.

So I asked specifically about the condition of the deck and he assured me it was in good condition "but it's been sitting out in the weather and has a couple of holes that have rusted through, but you can weld a piece of sheet metal over those." /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I didn't bother to go look at it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

Well, that's the difference between us Bird .... I did get a "manual" with my Busy Bee. It consisted of 4 photocopied sheets stapled together but hey, there's nothing too complicated about a shredder, especially this one. Mine has been sitting out in the elements for 4 years now and the paint has faded and there are a couple of rust spots that'll need attending to this spring but it hasn't rusted through yet. The rain must be a lot more acid further west.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

Frank, there's no telling how old that Busy Bee was that I called about. And I'd have gone to look at it, and probably would even have bought it if it hadn't been for the guy telling me how great it was, then telling me it had holes rusted through the deck. It was probably a good mower originally, and had probably been sitting out for many many years. And he was asking $250 for it.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

In general.. you get what you pay for.. the higher price models are usually heavier / heavier duty.. while the cheaper ones are lighter / lighter duty.

I've use a ford 951 / 950 series 4' rotary cutter. Worked great. Now I've got a 5' KK.. I've mowed with it a few seasons now.. no problems. I've mowed everything from ant mounds to heavy woody brush.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

I agree with theboman about the Fred Cain. It is a very well built unit at a reasonable price.

Re: 4\' rottary cutters

I recently had an extended discussion about this with my tractor dealer, I already have a mower, who had been to a seminar at Woods Equipment. He pointed out that there is a large oil channel in the power head of the Woods mowers that really bathes the bearing well. The Woods also has a lot of reinforcement, full skid pads, not just a few inches. Just look at them compared to others and I think you'll agree they are really good mowers. If I need to buy another, it will be a 4' Woods for my Kioti CK20HST. John
