I've got a 3cyl diesel 18hp 4wd Satoh tractor (the Buck model if I remember correctly).

I've been looking for a disc harrow to use with it, and found a nice used one, King Cutter brand, about 4-5' wide and 400 lbs in weight.

My question is, with a front loader on my tractor (so some additional front weight), will my tractor be able to lift this disc harrow up for traveling safely? And do folks think the tractor will have enough power to use this big a harrow?

Comments, suggestions please.

TIA

My Beaver, the Bucks little brother lifts my 4' king cutter box blade that is about 300lbs plus 3 additional 80lbs cutting edges that are stacked on top of the box. That is 540lbs. If I place one more 80lbs cutting edge onthe box the front tires are just barely able to steer.

I have a Blackhawk loader on the front and with a bucket of dirt I can carry the box blade plus all 5 of my extra cutting edge's stacked on top of the box. With all 5 balast blades the box cuts into a gravel road like a sandy beach but I run out of traction quickly. With the 3 extra cutting edge's on there it cuts well and I can fill and drag a full box down the driveway all day long.

I would get what ever width is just wider than your rear tires and you should have plenty of power and traction to pull it. You may find the disk needs some extra weight like my box blade to really cut like you want it. You should be able to add some weight to the disk but still be able to steer with a loader on the front.

My Buck lifts a 5' disc. It don't like it but it will do it. I have a big wheel weight on the front of mine. I have move round bales with the 3ph. No loader on mine.

You shouldn't have any problems with lift capacity, you may need weight in the rear tires for traction when pulling the disk for traction, the loader will offset the weight of the disk so you should be just fine.

Your weight should be fine, but I seem to remember seeing that weight capacity in my manual. I will look that up for you.

The other question, as noted above, is counter weight. These tractors aren't really that heavy, but what makes it difficult is that they're very 'squat', with a rather short wheelbase, so your rear weight's going to need ballast up front. I actually have a hard time with no weight on the front wheels when I mow with a rear 5' finish mower. Had to really mess around with the mower height settings and front check chains to get a decent cut without taking all the weight off the front wheels. I would guess my mower's around the same weight as the disc you're describing.

Maximum Lift capacity, as shown in my manual, is 1,430 pounds (500kg) at the lower hitch points.
