Just noticed yesterday a growling noise in left rear axle or wheel, more noticable went first letting out clutch, forward and backwards. Stopped driving it. Hydralic fluid is OK. Need some advice.

Sounds either very cheap or very expensive to fix.

My armchair guess would either be galled teeth on the final drive or something simple like a hung brake. The first thing I'd do is get the tractor on a hard surface, jack up and support the rear end then block the frontend. Then try turning the left rear wheel by hand. Of course it must be in 2wd with tranny in neutral. Do you feel a steady resistance? Are the brakes adjustable? Did something get lodged in the brake pedal linkage? Fiddle with that first.

If you feel no resistance then a hard bump, it could be a broken gear or foreign object in the gear case. Short clunky resistance ususally means a wheel bearing. Both would be pretty rare I think unless you were beating the heck out of it.

Have you drained the fluid? Do so now and check the condition. A significant amount of water could also be a culprit. It would be sitting at the bottom of the transmission/final drives and would rust the gears and bearings.

Let us know.

Thanks for reply crashz.....you'll love this.. Jacked up rear end, wheels turned easily, check fluid for 10th time, scatching my head.. Gears sound dry, but fluid level good...sound much worse when turning left....finally put in 4 wheel drive, sound stopped, back to 2 wheel, sound stopped...big smile on face while shaking my head...guess it was not engaged completely...back to digging...

Lube your 4wd shifter where it pivots under the seat they will get a bit sticky and it will cause the shifter to put presure on the fork at all times and cause this noise and if you run it too long this way it will wear off the shifter tip and then it would not shift between 2wd and 4wd .
