I just got a line on a 3414 with loader. Its rough looking, but i think i can get a decent deal on it.. well for around 3 grand(is that a good deal?) the mechanicals are supose to be good, just needs alot of paint. id bacially use this tractor for cleaning up and hauling brush and wood around in my woods. along with other misc. odds and ends.. Would this be a good tractor for that, or should i look for something else? I havnt personally seen the tractor, just pics. but before i buy I will test drive and check it out. Just kinda wanna know if its worth the trip for me to go check out.. what do you guys think?

Go to this website TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors It appears that the International Harvester 3414 was an industrial tractor. I also checked the SEARCH section here on TBN and there are several posts in regard to that model. I also checked the Internet. There are new and used parts available. You are considering buying a tractor that is 40+years old. It really depends if the tractor was well maintained, whether or not it was left outside in the elements or under covered storage, These are factors and variables that should be considered. There are plenty of 40+ year old tractors out there that are still currently running and working that are still dependable. It depends mainly on whether the tractor received the proper maintenance over the years and was taken care of. Be sure to check out the sources that I mentioned previously. The best of luck to you and I hope this helps somewhat.:tractor:

I found out it is a gas model, not diesel. Not sure if thats a bad thing. They must be pretty decently built machines if its 40 years old and still running!

Have you had the chance to check out the sources that I included in my previous post? Good luck and hopefully you may reach a deal. Just be sure to check out everything-PTO, 3point hitch, tires, rims, steering;etc. One thought? Start your buying price lower than the asking price. You can always go up, but rarely down. BTW, if the seller has an implement around that fits that tractor, ask him if he will help you attach it and try it out. A lot of hidden problems will be discovered this way, especially if this function fails to work properly. If the seller tells you beforehand that the tractor won't start because it needs a new battery, take a battery with you. You wouldn't want to buy a used tractor that was frozen up. Get my point? Good Luck.

creekbend,

yes i did get to check out that site, actually a couple days ago. It is a very helpful site. Shows all the specs and dimensions of the tractor. It doenst really give any feedback about problems or things like that, but still helpful none the less. I got a good buddy, a diesel mechanic/tractor fixer guy (technical term) that i will take with me to scope out the machine.

The one downfall it doesnt have is hydraulic hookups in back.. I would reeally like that. not sure if it would be difficult to add in the future or not?? Need the tractor before i need the hydro though!! :) Im also not sure how much of a gas hog a tractor like this would be???? 40 years old and all..

well I will be the new owner of that tractor in the morning.. we went and drove it this morning, and it seemed like a decent tractor for the money. have a few things i need to get for it.. A drawbar being one of them, a new seat, and fix the break on the right tire..

The break thing I got a buddy who will fix for a case of beer.. the drawbar i will have to try and find one somewhere. I might not ever need one, but then again i might use it all the time. So we settled for a couple hundred less because of them items

I own a 3414 with a 3120 backhoe. It is officially my stumpdigger. It is a pretty decent machine. My electrics were hosed up on mine when I got it. Someone didn't really know what they were doing with the wiring and it was a battery drainer until I rewired it.

I ran it for awhile and it started to slip a bit lately and I finally discovered where the tranny oil level check is - was low... check bolt was covered in grease and dirt. Hopefully I didn't wear the clutches down as the final drive gasket on one side needs repair/replace. The transmission needs oil.

Take my advice. First thing when the weather allows, get the thing cleaned up with some engine degreaser and a hosing off and go through the wiring - get an operators manual. I fixed the wiring and now the glow plugs actually work as well (just rewired correctly). The manuals are about 30 bucks.

The machine is very heavy and lacks ROPS. Mine, with the hoe is about 9,500 pounds per the hauler and scale slips.

Mine is a diesel and starts without ether now that the glow plugs are fixed, but I don't keep it out in the winter or use it at all. At least in the diesel, don't want to run it empty on fuel, cuz you have to go through a manual pumping procedure.

If you need any help, you can msg me and I'll do my best, but I'm not a mechanic.
