I was moving some snow and lost the steering. The wheels turned all the way to the left. You can spin the steering wheel but nothing happens. I lifted the front end with the bucket and got the wheels off the ground. Then I could turn the wheels by hand, but when I let go the wheels snap back the left. I checked the hydraulic suction filter and it's not plugged. I blew through both ends of that filter and had no restriction. Shouldn't there be restriction against the flow? Any help would be appreciated the tractor is blocking the driveway and the wife needs to go to town. Thank you!

Welcome to TBN:D

That is quite an unusual problem you have. Here are a few questions that can help us help you:

I assume there are not fluid leaks under the machine?
When turning the steering wheel, is there resistance in it and does the engine change at all?
How hard was it to move the front wheels by hand?

Because of the symptoms, I am thinking the valve that's connected to the steering wheel is the problem...Is your machine still under warranty?

Thank you for your help!
There is no leaks. There was no resistance or engine change when turning the wheel. The steering wheel just kept turning. It was very hard to turn the wheels by hand and when you let go they snap back to the left. No it is not under warranty.

Sure sounds like steering valve has a problem.(stuck) I wonder if you loosen a fitting on steering cylinder and bleed them if it would help free it up.
First time I read about this type of problem.

Where would the steering valve and steering cylinder be located?

I will post some pictures from JDParts.

The cylinder is attached to the frame and one wheel, with a tie rod running to the other wheel. The valve is buried up in the center under the steering column.

I am not sure how the steering wheels connects to the valve, but possibly a bolt or pin fell out since the wheel is just turning freely.

The steering get's it's power from a dedicated hydraulic pump, but uses the common sump for it's oils supply-so if your other hydraulics work then I doubt your low on fluid. And since the wheels go back to the left I am going to assume the valve and it's feedback are of since that is probably when it let go so it thinks that's where the wheels need to be.

So, my suggestion...If the steering wheel is just turning like it's not connected to anything, then you need to get to where the shaft connects to the valve.

Hope this helps...
