3316 loader question

I got the 3316 last week and have been doing a variety of tasks, mowing, moving dirt, pulling small trees, etc. Today I was doing the 9.1 hour maintenance and I came across a limitation in the loader manual of 500 lbs when using the hay spike. That was a surprise because all the literature says the loader limit is 1400 lbs. Is the 500lb limitation unballasted? I definitely don't want to damage the loader, but I don't know of many 500 lb round bales. Why would they sell a round bale spike for the loader if there is a 500 lb limit?

Answering my own question. My real question is what drives the 500lb limitation in the manual? Front axle load? Overall tractor weight? Or overloading the hydraulics of the loader itself? The front axle or tractor weight problem can be partially overcome with rear ballast.

I guess I'll be looking for a 3 point spear. Drag the round bales off with a chain them move them with the rear spear.

I have no intention of doing anything unsafe and I would rather look stupid on the forum than in the field.

I have a 4110 with FEL. I use a spear on my bucket to pick up 5X5 rolls but it makes it very light in the rear without a roll on 3 point spear. I have to be very careful when roll is only on the front. It will pick up the back wheels. I can use only the FEL spear but must be very careful. I also stripped out the splines and coupling on front drive shaft using only the FEL spear when in 4X4
It puts alot of weight on the front end when loaded. You may want to load your rear tires also. Just my thoughts and experience with mine.

Take note that a 4110 weighs about 4000 lbs, and a 3316 only weighs about 2600 lbs.

The answer to the question is front axle loading. The spear moves the load even further out from the pivot point and adds more stress to the front axle.
