Ok, some I feel like I got screwed. I traded off my 2544 for a 3184 this weekend and now the thing won't run right. It will die as soon as I turn the choke off and thing will also die with the choke more than 1/2. I put a new fuel filter on, fuel pump, and new gas. Anyone have any ideas as to what else it could be?

If monkeying with choke makes a difference, your carburetor is out of adjustment.

I did not think that there were any adjusters on the Kohler carbs. At least the new ones.

Is there an mixture screw and idle adjuster?

Thanks

If it ran fine before you brought it home it sounds like some crud got shook loose in transport and is lodged in the main jet. I've had it happen to me, I had a chipper/shredder that I gave to my brother I started and ran it for him here and when he got it home after a 100 mile ride in his truck it would do the same thing you described. The trip home had shaken some crud loose in the fuel system and ended up in the jet.

The fuel filter I put in I got from Theisen's which was not the OEM. I am going to get an OEM tomorrow then the Cub Store is open. I looked at the filter and it is emptying out when I shut the choke off. The one I got must be to small or something.

I would bet some trash was stirred up in the tank. The gas pickup in the tank is just a plastic tube which goes close to the bottom of the tank. There is no strainer on the end. I have a 3235 and have had problems with the line getting clogged in the tank. The fastest solution is to take the gas line loose on the tank side of the gas filter and blow the line out. Be sure and have the gas cap off when you do this. If you don't, you can pressurize the tank and damage the low fuel sensor or pickup seal. You can hold a light close to the tank and see part of the inside. The tank goes almost the whole width of the tractor and has a hopper bottom in the middle. If you need to take the tank off, let me know and I can provide you instructions. It is not as hard as you would think.

I will try the new filter tomorrow, and if that don't work I will give the air a shot. Should the gas flow out pretty fast when I take the old filter off? The line coming from the gas tank that is. I have a full tank of gas too. When I took the old filter off today not much gas was coming out of the tank side line. I will let you know tomorrow if the Cub fuel filter fixes the issue.

Still no go on this thing!

I put a new Cub fuel filter on.
I made sure the fuel line was not blocked, and to double make sure I took a new fuel line ran it straight to the tank via the gas cap hole and hooked it up direct and still had the same problem.
I took the line off the fuel pump and made sure it was pumping gas and it was.
I checked the spark on the plugs and that is good.
I sprayed carb and choke cleaner in the carb.
I put carb and choke cleaner in the tank with new gas.

I took the air cleaner cover off to try and find a mixture screw and could not find one. The only thing I saw was the idle screw. There is also some electronic thing attached to the side of the carb which I have no idea what it is for.

I have two questions.

Is there a mixture screw or something on the carb that I can adjust?

What is the electronic thing on the back side of the carb it is facing the firewall?

Help please!

My next step is to take it to the stealer.

Sorry to hear about your problems, I think once you get this worked out you will like your cub. The "electronic thing" is your fuel solenoid, which sounds like it is working because your tractor is running or responding with the choke. I think that you will probably need to take the carb off and disassemble and put it in a true carb cleaner. I have never had any luck with the spray can carb cleaner stuff. One other thing I ran into once was the fuel suction tube in the tank was actually touching the bottom of the tank and would run itself out of gas in a short time. For that one I removed the tube and snipped it off at an angle. Good luck

Should I take the carb off and drop the whole thing in a bucket of carb cleaner? Or should I take it apart and clean it with spray cab cleaner and a air compressor? Is there any mixture screw anywhere?

This will help a lot. I am going to try and clean it up tonight. I have already made an appointment to take it in tomorrow, so if I cannot get it working we will see what the dealer finds out.

I got it fixed!!!

It was the carb. The bowl had about 1 inch of yellow goo in it. I cleaned everything out and soaked the carb in diesel fuel for about one hour. Then I used my air compressor to blow everything off.

The only thing that went wrong was I lost one of the screws that hold the fuel shut off valve on, so I will have to pick that up tomorrow. Other than that it runs great now.

Thanks for all you help!

Ya, the dealer I bought it from said they used it all for there pull behind sprayer. I emailed him back to let him know all the BS I went through to get this thing running right again. I wish I could send him a bill for my time. Is there one honest sales person on this planet?

I also think there is something wrong with the power steering. I can hear a loud whining noise sometimes and can feel it through the steering wheel.

I will be putting new post up about this in a fews days if I can't figure it out either.

Well the carb is messed up again. I have had this thing off like 4 times now, there must be something messed up somewhere. It will run pretty good now until it warms up all the way. Then it will surge with full throttle and will die when I lower the throttle to quickly. I found a guy on ebay that is going to sell me one for $60 which I think is new. I might just go this route, and hopefully be done with all these fuel issues.

Pull the top or drop the carb bowl and inspect it for 'cruddage'.. Take some paper towels and soak up & dispose of the fule present in the bowl.. Spray in some carb cleaner ande let sthings soak a bit. Remove the fuel line and turn the key to the run position (solenoid OPEN) and blast some air thru to clear it out. Check your jets and clean out if needed and reassemble.. Pull the tank line ooff the inlet side and blow air thru to the tank to assure the line is clear.. (loosen the cap)

Good Luck Pilgrim..

Well that seems to have fixed it. Runs like a new mower again. There must be something still messed up with my old carb.
