I have looked at a 3070 Massey, it is a 4 WD, FEL, Cab
tractor, I think it is 80 HP, not sure of the year yet.
Tach is replaced, dealer said it was at 4000 hours,
who knows. Tractor is a repaint, looks pretty good.
Please let me know if anyone has experiance with the
3070, good tractor, bad tractor, service issues ect.
Also if you have any ideas as to possible values I would
love to hear your thoughts. I have a hillside farm
are they stable tractors? Thanks

The three point hitch is an electrical nightmare

Please explain, why an electronic night mare?
The controls or what? The hitch is hydralic like all hitches?
Thanks Liberty

If you sit in the drivers seat and look to your right, there should be a control panel, with knobs to control your 3-point hitch, height, speed of lift, draft etc. If the tractor does have this, it is an electric over hydraulic system to operate the three point. There is an expensive control box underneath the knobs, and there should be a "brain" located under the cab. You cannot trouble shoot this tractor on your own, the dealer has trouble shooting equipment , and even with that, dealers have difficulty repairing them. Do not take my word for this, just find an honest Massey dealer that has had experience with them and he will tell you the same thing.

Hi there,

I'm also looking at a 3070 here in the UK right now and have been chatting with a MF engineer about them.

You need to check the front axle bushes - poor maintenance and/or heavy loader work can wear the bushes badly and if not replaced can lead to wear on the pinion shaft.

Also check the handbrake - big deal fixing it if it's been left on while driving the tractor.

Biggest failing is the 32 speed gearbox (if fitted). Eventually causes loads of problems apparantly and was eventully dropped by MF. 16 speed is much better I hear.

Electrical connections can cause problems if not looked after, but that's the same on any tractor - the more electrics the more to eventually go wrong.

That said, still a nice tractor, made from 1988 to 1994 or 6 I think.

It may be a bit big for my current useage, but you're only here once! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

When purchasing a used tractor with 4000 hrs anything is possible. Try to gather some history from the previous owner or servicing dealer. The handbrake incorporates an internally splined disc located on the rear axle pinion gear. It is a simple design but there would be alot of labor involved in the repair. I've had an 87 model 3060 since new. It has the speedshift 32 speed transmission and like all models the electronically controlled 3pt system. The only problem to report is that the inline fuse for the 3pt was located next to the battery causing corrosion and loss of voltage. Since being relocated there are no problems to report. If you get a chance to use the autotronic features these tractors are equipped with you'll be amazed.
