3040 4th gear noise

I have noticed when using 4th gear in medium range I hear a high pitched whine that I do not hear in other gears. It makes it at all RPM but when I notice the most is under a load at about 1,500 RPM. I have even noticed the noise when I have the shuttle in neutral but the transmission 4th. It got annoying enough last night that I moved down to 3rd gear and jumped up the RPM. Has anybody else expererinced this problem and what was the fix?

Hello Dallas_Lily. I have not seen nor heard of this and so I called Montana and the they have not had this with any of the compacts. It sounds like it could possibly be caused by a mainshaft bearing or not enough end play in the mainshaft.

I would take it to the dealership you got it from and have their techs take a look at it. I am interested in seeing what it is so please keep us posted.

I would vote for improper gear cut.

I went to my dealer last night and feel much better about it now. He had two other 3040 in the yard and they both made the exact same noise. He also had a 3840 that made the same noise. I have narrowed the noise down to just fourth gear and it makes the noise no matter which range you are in. My dealer had never noticed the noise untill I pointed it out to him. He was going to contact Montana now that he knows exactly what I am talking about. All this I guess is just me and I can not believe that Montana would have 4 machines at the same dealer that have the same problem.

If you want the hear which noise I am talking about go start a 3040 and leave at idle, put the shuttle in neutral, the trans in 4th and let the clutch out, then do the same in third. That is the whine that I am hearing only louder when under a load.
