The 3038e has an electrically & hydraulically operated PTO that has an internal braking system. It's either on (spinning) or it's off (locked) which makes it a real PITA when trying to hook a PTO shaft to the tractor because you can't spin the PTO shaft coming out the back of the tractor by hand to line up the splines.
I talked to the JD mechanic and he confirmed that there is no "override" to the PTO braking system for "safety reasons". I told him what a PITA that made hooking up PTO driven equipment and he recommended adding an overrunning clutch to the PTO shaft of the tractor so that you can spin it one way by hand to line up the splines. Thinking that was overkill, I came up with the following solution:
I took a cheap cresent wrench and used a Dremel tool to grind the jaws of the wrench so that they would fit over the splines of the tractor PTO shaft. Now all I have to do is put the wrench on the PTO shaft and turn it until the splines line up.
