Here's a good one for you! I borrowed my father in laws 3038e to repair some stump grinder remains and it was parked outdoors overnight and it rained. The next morning, I proceeded to do my work and I noticed standing water in the "moat" around the fuel tank filler cap. I figured some debris was clogging the drain hole so I stopped the tractor, popped the hood, and discovered a wild cherry pit was plugging the hole like a ball check valve. I removed the pit and the water drained out so I closed the hood and went about my work. Not more than 5 minutes later, I look at the fuel gauge (because it's entertaining to watch the needle move as the fuel sloshes) and it's gone!
It appears that the dial is separate from the rest of the submerged parts and is possibly actuated magnetically...like a mag drive pump. It also appears that it simply snaps onto the submerged components which are inserted in a separate hole in the tank. The only explanation I can offer is that the hole in the hood is a little close to one edge of the fuel gauge and perhaps when I opened the hood it caught the dial and popped it off. I walked back to the exact spot where I cleared the check valve and looked all over the place on the ground but found nothing.
My fear is that JD will say I have to buy the whole fuel tank as an assembly for $500.00.
I'm going to check on-line for something and hit the dealer as a last resort.
