I just finished my 100 hr service on my 3010 ...(what a pain but cheaper than the dealer, I'll get better with practice) I could not unscrew the retaining ring for the fuel filter and I'm a little nervous about using channel lox...I wold appreciate any suggestions.

I had the same problem and ended up using a small piece of oak against the ridges and whacking it with a hammer

I used channel locks; just be sure you're turning it the right direction (left to right since that ring stays on the tractor, not the filter bowl - of course that's assuming the 3010 is the same as the B7100 and B2710, both of which used the same filter).

Refreshing-I could not get the thing off either so I let the dealer do it on my last warranty inspection.
Guess I should save this post so I can have a better chance next time!

Looking at the filter, turn the ring clockwise to remove.I use a large pair of channel lock pliers. The whole slotted ring is removed(like a big nut). After ring removal, the plastic bowl and "O" ring are removed by pulling straight down.I forgot to mention, first shut off the fuel by turning the petcock on the side of the housing, otherwise a real mess will result. The air blead procedure is easy. After putting all back together and turning fuel cock back on, the air vent-cock on the fuel injector pump is opened fully, start engine, run for 30sec.,stop engine, close air vent-cock,restart engine all should be ok. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks Botaman for the tips on the fuel filter replacement. I know the manual states 100 hours for replacement, but I had 210 hours on my 3010 when I traded it and never changed the filter even though I had one to replace it with. The sight glass and element looked as clean as the day I picked it up. In some cases, I would think you had the possibility of getting more dirt in the new filter when installing than what the old one you had removed had in it. Maybe dumb reasoning but that's how I looked at it. I know I won't change my 3130's fuel filter at 100 hours unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I made the wise decision to have my dealer change the fuel filter and politely as my wife for another JD (Jack Daniels that is...) with a splash on the rocks.
You guys are working too hard!

When I picked up materials for the BX23 service, I noticed the dealer did not include a fuel filter, so I asked for one. There were several guys there who said not to bother changing it. One said that fuel used to be dirty, but is so clean nowdays that the filter does not need changing. I have zero diesel experience.

This dealer has done some pretty shoddy work, so I'd appreciate other opinions, and advice on if and when to change the filter.

I did the very same thing today. I loosened mine with a chain strap. A large pair of pliers would probably work also. Good luck on finding the right filter element, the one I got from NAPA was the wrong one. Now
I,m trying to find the right one without a part number. The filter did not have one on it.
