Yanmar 1700
Hello,

I have been reading a lot of these posts and it is an excellent source of information.

I recently purchased a Yanmar 1700. I have been replacing the fuel lines, hoses, belt, missing pins etc. I have been trying to find out what the heck the small ~ 5/16" hose is on the bottom of the radiator on the right side as your looking at the front. It is about 3 inches long and goes from the bottom of the radiator to a hexoganal fitting welded to the frame and stops there. I am replacing all the hoses and I was wondering what it was and do I have to replace it or plug it? What does it do?

I have been attempting to locate the hydraulic filter. The manual states it is under the right foot when your sitting on the tractor and it will be under a plate with three bolts. I have found something that could be the triangular plate but it is in the middle of the tractor between where your feet go. Is this it?

I had a leak in the gas plastic diesel tank and I ordered a new one online. I would like to fix the old one for a spare. It is a hairline crack underneath one of the restraining straps. What would be the best way to fix the leak?

While replacing the fuel lines I had a problem with the bend between the fuel filter and the bleeder valve. The bend was so sharp the hose had a tendency to kink. I got a piece of 5/16" brake line and a tubing bender and made a short 1.5" piece to put inside the fuel line to keep it from kinking. By the way, does anybody know some one who sells black hose clamps? It would look much nicer.

re: small 3rd hose...
just your drain hose...
that "hexagonal block" should be where the coolant comes out when you drain the radiator... if I remember it correctly, on this block is the plug that has to be loosened to get 'er to drain.

re: hyd. filter...
should be a screen... behind the panel where the suction line attaches to the transmission... and should be three bolts.
have a big 'ol bucket ready if you haven't drained it first... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

you should try to get at least a parts manual from one of the dealers here... the pictures alone are worth the price of the manual.

One thing I have found to fix small cracks in plastic that works really good-

Clean the plastic with rubbing alcohol inside and out.

Sand the outside of the tank with 300-400 grit sand paper until very clean.

Cut a few strips of a plastic milk carton about 1/2" wide x 4"

Using a soldering iron, melt the plastic strips and the crack together like you are welding. You need to get them both very gooey for them to permanently bond.

Let cool. test with water.

It takes some practice but works really good. I also do this on the hard coiled air hoses if I burn a small hole in them from cutting, etc.

Hope this helps,
Aaron

I agree with hoye.. actually bonding the plastic ( plastic welding' is going to be better than a 'glue'.. however.. after bonded.. I'd also glue it as a backup.

There are some nice flat soldering iron tips made just for plastic bonding. A wood burning tip would work as well.

All is very good advice. Have done it myself. After bonding your plastic use a glue gun to help seal the outer layer. You can buy glue sticks made just for this purpose. pve has to be very clean!

Mcmaster-Carr has a plastic welder that we use at work all of the time, and it works great. It may not justify itself for one small job, but if it's something you are going to do on a regular basis, it's worth it. It's just like a soldering iron but it also blows air through it at a low pressure and you use the hot air to melt the plastic. We use it to weld 24" PVC tubing and PVC sheets.

Thank you all for the suggestions and information. I've got it running again in the garage. I am adding a Oil pressure and temperture gauge. I have also located a place in town that will strip, prime and powder coat all the body parts for about $225. I will post pictures after that. Right now it looks a little rough.

I was in Advanced Auto Parts looking for a metric adapter kit for the Sunpro Gauge (they don't carry it) and I noticed they have 3/8" and 5/16" hose clamps that look close to the original. I have been using the worm drive ones.

The hydraulic filter is not behind the suction line. It is behind the 3 bolt plate at the front of the transmission under the clutch housing. Email if you need some manuals.

Hmmm...

On mine that 5/16 hose goes from the radiator, through a guide under the alternator, to a fitting in the engine's water jacket near the oil pressure sender. I assumed it was spot-cooling for the oil gallery.

Could yours have a radiator and engine block from different year models so there is nowhere on the engine for that hose to connect? This would be typical of a 'Vietnam rebuild' where parts don't quite match up. In that case I would expect the back end of the coolant hose to be plugged by threading a bolt into it. Does this describe what you see?

I asked for the original 30 year old fuel line to be included when I bought a used Yanmar fuel filter assembly, because the line still had the separate wire wrap with it. This wire wrap is flexible, similar to a kids Slinky toy. I thought the wire wrap was to armor the fuel line, but maybe it prevents kinks also.
