3 Pt Splitter Open or Closed Center Valve

Just got a TSC 3-pt log splitter for my Ford 4000 4-cyl diesel - the OLD 4000, I think its like the 800. (yep, I know its going to be slow after using a friend's 3 pt. splitter, but I don't split a lot and like not having another engine to maintain). The TSC splitter came with a kit for converting from open to closed center valve for a closed center hydraulic system. Anyone know what type the tractor has or how I can tell?

You will be wanting to add a PTO pump for it! I can't think of any we sold that haven't added that or gone to a self contained unit. At 7 gallons per minute your on the bottom of the power.

I wish I had 7 gpm, I think mine is only 4 - talk about bottom end! I know its going to be slow, but I only split about 4 cords or so a season. But maybe if I get tired of watching grass grow I will get the pto pump. Any recommendations on one?

That does NOT mean it will be gutless!! We are happy with the way ours splits. It splits a log faster than I can, so that is good enough for me!!

It is diesel powered, only 1 engine to maintain, and 1 fuel source to supply.

I don't think it will be all that slow. Certainly not stupid slow. A 4" diameter 24" stroke 2" rod cylinder will have a 36 second cycle time full stroke both ways.

Not having to worry about another engine and ease of storage were the main reasons I got the 3 pt splitter. Will be getting the hoses and more hydraulic fluid this week, so I'll have a chance to try it out next weekend. Thanks much for your help & comments.
