I am wanting to know what it would be used for??? I think it would be take the place of a bungie cord to hold to valve open. I assume it's NOT to put the spool into float mode (I'm guessing it would have stated "Float" but I don't know for sure). Also, would this work for a hydraulic motor? Description below with a link, too.

3 POSITION DETENT KIT
Brand new, WOLVERINE by PRINCE detent kit for WOLVERINE MB series valve. Converts spring centering spools to 3 position manual detent.

The detent kit should give you detent in fwd and rev on a hyd motor, and lock the flow for a log splitter valve, or another valve downstream.

The neutral is already detent.

The MB31 series valve does not have float.

The MB21 series does.

Prince offers a "motor spool" for $38, how is that different? and since this detent kit is cheaper, what's up? Why would they have a separate "motor spool"? Could this be only One direction? (which is not a problem)

A motor spool is designed so that when you put the lever in neutral, the hyd motor will coast down. If you use a tandem spool valve for a hyd motor, and the hyd motor, like on a hyd bush hog its turning fast, the valve will block all fluid flow in neutral, and the centrifugal force on the hyd motor will act like a pump, and since there is nowhere for the fluid to go, something will burst. A DRV across the hyd motor is necessary in that situation.

You could perhaps use a detented spool to operate a hyd motor, if you release the lever slowly as to let the hyd motor wind down.

So if you have a motor spool with 3 position detent; will the neutral position be a "float" as in it would allow flow to pass through until the motor stopped? Could you use this type of valve on anything other than a motor? as in some other hydraulic valve due to the fact that the neutral position sounds as though it would not hold a cylinder for example in place?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, that is correct.

TANDEM CENTER VALVES
Tandem center valves when in a neutral position by passes the flow of hydraulic oil to the return line. This is used to hold the cylinder/piston in position with no load on the pumps. When this system is the pump is running constantly to keep a ready supply of hydraulic oil, but as long as the cylinder/piston is not in operation the pump is working under no pressure or load. This system keeps wear and tear on the pump down to a minimum.

OPEN CENTER VALVES
Open center valves are the same as the tandem center, except that in the neutral position all lines are connected back to the reservoir. The primary use of this system is to prevent "shock" loading when the valve is placed in neutral. This takes pressure off the motor. This system is used in situations where the operating device needs to be moved by hand.

Thanks again J.J. Your input is, as I've seen in numerous posts, invaluable.

Now using this logic; it occurs to me that when purchasing a stack valve assembly getting a 3 position detent "normal" dual acting control valve spool would be of more value than a motor spool as it would be more versatile in its application and when a motor spool was required adding a double relief valve on the implement with the hydraulic motor is a better choice. Is my logic sound? :confused3:

My JD owners manual states for a hydraulic motor: With the engine off put the SCV in float. Connect the hydraulic motor. Start tractor and to start the hydraulic motor move the SCV lever from float to retract. To stop the hydraulic motor move the lever back to float. DO NOT MOVE THE LEVER TO NEUTRAL, this may cause back pressure resulting in damage to the hydraulic motor and/or hoses.

There is another way to run a hyd motor in one direction, and that is with a valve like this. Flow control valve.

Surplus Center - 3/8 NPT HYD FLOW CONTROL VALVE W/RELIEF RDRS137-08

Connection

http://www.surpluscenter.com/adspecs/AS9-064-38.pdf

This valve will let you push the lever to control motor rpm from 0 to max motor rpm, and has relief.

The excess flow or unused flow just continues downstream for use by other valves. If you use full flow, then any valves downstream will get no fluid, as the flow is going through the motor and then to tank.

Get the correct valve in GPM for your flow and hose size.
